No. 39 Women's Tennis Opens Home Play with 5-2 Win Over St. John?s

NEW YORK – In its home opener, the No. 39 Columbia women's tennis team put on a powerful display to power past St. John's, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center.
The doubles duos finally gelled for the Lions (1-2), yielding wins on two of three doubles courts to secure the opening point of the match. Columbia's third team of Adi Milstein and Kanika Vaidya disposed of Zofia Stanisz and Jadie Collins, 6-2, to set the tone. On the second court Rima Asatrian and Alexandra Solovyev could not hold on against Anna Morozova and Natalie Vavulina, 6-3, as the doubles scored moved to 1-1. The 42nd-ranked tandem of Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung collected a 6-4 win to secure the doubles point for Columbia.
The Lions singles lineup quickly sealed the match. Vivian Cheng dominated on the sixth court, polishing of a 6-2, 6-0 win over Irina Preotescu, with Vaidya closed behind with a 6-0, 6-4, win at No. 3, putting Columbia ahead 3-0. Leung recorded the match-clinching win with another straight-set win, taking home a 7-5, 6-0, win over Elgegren. Jiang wrapped up the singles wins on the day for Columbia, closing out a three setter, 4-6, 6-4, 10-1.
Columbia returns to action when it travels to Ithaca, New York, for the ECAC Team Tournament Feb. 6-8.
