HANOVER, N.H. – Despite a strong second-set performance, the Columbia women's volleyball team was unable to finish its rally as it fell to Dartmouth, 3-1, on the road on Friday night.
Trailing 11-8 early on in the first set, the Lions began to rally behind the serve of Sarah Gurbach as they went on a 3-0 run to tie things up at 11-11. Unfortunately that was all they could pull out as Dartmouth pulled away late in the set to take a 25-18 opening-set victory.
It was Columbia's time to shine in set two, however, as the Lions rallied once again behind the serve of Gurbach, picking up five-consecutive points to take a 14-9 lead.
From that point on it was all Columbia as the Lions were able to take away set two, 25-18, on a Luciana Del Valle' kill to tie things up heading into the break.
The match remained intense in set three with the score tied all the way to 23-23 before Darmouth was able to pull away with three of the next four points to take a 26-24 victory and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Trailing 22-17 late in set four, the Lions began to rally with the help of a kill by Zoe Jacobs but it was not enough as the Big Green took set four, 25-21, to seal a 3-1 victory.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday night as they round out their regular-season road trip at Harvard at 5 p.m.
