PHILADELPHIA - The 121st Penn Relays are in the books for the Columbia track & field teams, as a few Saturday relays capped the competition from Franklin Field.
The Lions were highlighted today by a strong running from the men's 4x800m relay team. The quartet of Spencer Haik, Robert Napolitano, Connor Claflin and Brendon Fish took sixth place, running the third fastest time in school history at 7:21.59, led by Claflin's 1:48.31 split.
The men's team also took part in the 4x1600m relay, as Benjamin Ritz, Daniel Nestor, Marc Violone and Casey Adams clocked a 16:44.83 to take 11th place. Ritz put the best split on the board, running his four laps in 4:06.7.
On the women's side, the 4x800m relay team of Leila Mantilla, Sarah Hardie, Aryn Foland and Olivia Sadler came in 10th place at 8:55.27.
Friday was highlighted by All-American Nadia Eke, who set a new triple jump standard in the Ivy League. Eke went 43'11.25" (13.39m) to take second to Florida's Ciarra Brewer, the 2015 Indoor NCAA Champion in the event. Brewer bested Eke by .75 with a leap of 44'0" for the win.
Eke's leap proved to be less than an inch better than a 2007 jump by Cornell's Jaomi Maduka, who went 43'10.5". The senior previously held a Columbia school record in the triple jump of 43'8.5" (13.32m), a mark that she achieved three times. Eke's personal best mark came at the African Championships in August of 2014, when she went 13.40m (43'11.5").
