
Field Hockey to Welcome Six Newcomers This Fall

NEW YORK – The Columbia field hockey program will welcome six members to the squad this fall, as announced by head coach Caroline Nichols today. The Class of 2019 is comprised of a forward, two midfielders, a back and one goalkeeper spanning four states and one international student-athlete (Canada).
“Columbia field hockey is excited to welcome the 2019 class,” said Nichols. “I am looking forward to their immediate impact on the program and I know they will raise the standard for Columbia. This class is a dynamic group, with a range of talent and personalities. I am very excited about the unique skills each of these athletes will bring to the team and the many positions they will cover on the field. Columbia field hockey is continuing to climb and the level of this incoming class is proof of that.”
Danielle Buttinger | F | Waterloo, Ontario | Resurrection Catholic Secondary School
Buttinger earned league MVP honors in 2013 and 2014 while leading Resurrection in scoring. She played for the U16 and U18 Ontario teams at the Canadian National Field Hockey Championships. Her numerous academic accolades include All-Ontario Scholar and District 8 Academic All-Star honors. Buttinger's family has a strong athletic background as her uncle, Dick Duff, won six Stanley Cups while playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens and was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Additionally, her cousin Cody Golobef is a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Katherine Cavanaugh | B | St. Louis, Mo. | Visitation Academy
Cavanaugh was given first team all-conference and second team all-metro honors as a senior. Her academic honors include NFHCA Academic Squad and St. Louis Post-Dispatch Scholar Athlete for the 2014-15 year. She led her team to the state quarterfinals in all four years at Visitation. Cavanaugh played for Aim Field Hockey Club and participated with the USA Field Hockey Futures program in 2013 and 2014. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was part of a Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering team that won the state competition in 2014 and participated again in 2015.
Katie Dempsey | GK | Chadds Ford, Pa. | Archmere Academy
Dempsey was a four-year letterwinner and team captain in 2013 and 2014 at Archmere Academy. She was an All-Diamond State Conference selection in 2012, 2013 and 2014. She played club hockey with the WC Eagles where she won a U16 National Club Championship and Disney Showcase gold medal in 2013 and Pool Q NIT title in 2015. Dempsey is a member of National Honor Society, the French Honors Society and was an AP Student with Distinction.
Katie Koester | M | Stony Brook, N.Y. | Ward Melville
Koester was a four-year letterwinner in field hockey and lacrosse. She was named first team all-conference as a freshman and went on to earn first team all-county honors following her junior and senior years. She was also named to Newsday's All-Long Island first team after posting seven goals and 13 assists, the most of any player in Suffolk County, as a senior. Koester competed at Futures Elite, was invited to play at the AAU Junior Olympics in 2015, and played at the National Futures tournament in 2013 and 2014. She was a three-time New York State Scholar Athlete recipient, an AP Scholar with Honors, and a member of National Honor Society.
Keegan Marsh | M/B | Salisbury, Md. | James M. Bennett
Marsh started all four years in field hockey and lacrosse at James M. Bennett High School where she was a three-time All-Bayside South Conference first team selection and two-time conference defensive player of the year. She also picked up first team all-state honors in 2014 and second team accolades in 2013. During her summers, Marsh played for Shore Byrds Field Hockey Club team.
Elizabeth Shrout | M/F | Potomac, Md. | Stone Ridge
Shrout played four years of field hockey at Stone Ridge and won the Coach's Award three times. She played club hockey with the Washington Wolves where they won Pool Q of the U19 Festival and finished fourth at the U19 Disney Showcase. Academically, she is a member of the Cum Laude Society.
