NEW YORK — The Columbia volleyball team (10-7, 5-2 Ivy) enters the second half of the Ivy League season with its best record since 2011, and travels to Cornell (8-9, 2-5 Ivy) for its lone match of the week. First serve is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. from Newman Arena at Bartels Hall.
TOP NOTES
• Columbia (5-2) is tied for second in the Ivy League with Yale, but the Lions hold the head-to-head tiebreaker, defeating the Bulldogs in five sets on September 30 … Princeton is two games ahead at 7-0 as the only remaining undefeated team.
• Columbia's 5-2 Ivy League record ties for its best through seven matches with the 2011 team that finished 9-5.
• First-year Chichi Ikwuazom has met the NCAA minimums to qualify for statistical rankings and is No. 5 in the country in hitting percentage (.449) and No. 15 in blocks per set (1.43) … To qualify, you must compete in 66.7% of your team's sets … Senior Cassie Wes is No. 8 nationally in digs per set (5.30).
SCOUTING THE BIG RED
• After starting the Ivy League season 0-3, Cornell has split its last two conference weekends and has won three of its last five matches overall ... Last weekend, the Big Red fell in five sets at Dartmouth, but bounced back to win in five sets at Harvard ... Five of Cornell's seven Ivy League matches have been played to five sets, where it holds a 2-3 record ... Each of the team's last three wins have come in five sets, which includes a non-conference victory at Binghamton (Oct. 11) ... Carla Sganderlla heads the offense with a team-leading 2.88 kills per set ... Sganderlla also leads Cornell in total aces (26) and aces per set (0.44), while ranking second in total kills (170), second in digs per set (2.59) and third in total digs (153) ... As a team, the Big Red rank second in the Ivy League in kills per set (12.78), hitting percentage (.222) and assists per set (12.17).
INSIDE THE CORNELL SERIES
• Cornell holds a large 50-13 lead in the all-time series, but Columbia has had the upper-hand by winning nine of the last 15 since 2009 ... The Lions won a series-best four straight meetings by sweeping the Big Red in 2011 and 2012 ... Six of the last 10 series meetings have gone to five sets, including the matchup on September 24 in New York, where Columbia came back from two sets down to win in five ... Columbia took a four-set decision the last time the two sides met in Ithaca (Sep. 26, 2015).
LAST TIME THEY MET (Sep. 24, 2016 – New York, N.Y.)
• Columbia saved three match points in the third set and came all the way back from a two-set deficit to defeat Cornell (14-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-9) in the 2016 Ivy League opener ... Cornell took the first two sets and earned double match point at 24-22 in the third, but the Lions saved both, and then saved a third trailing 25-24 ... Columbia scored the final three points of the third set to keep the match going, and trailed for only three points in either of the two remaining sets ... The Lions scored three of the final four points to win the fourth and never trailed in the fifth, opening a 5-1 advantage in the race to 15 that Cornell never recovered from ... Sophomore Ara Peterson hit .619 with a career-high 15 kills in the victory, junior Anja Malesevic recorded her first career double-double and senior libero Cassie Wes came up with a career-high 31 digs, tying for the third-most in a match in program history ... It marked Columbia's first two-set comeback in an Ivy League match in exactly five years, which it also did at the expense of Cornell on September 24, 2011 in Ithaca.

IN THE IVY HUNT
• Columbia is tied for second place in the Ivy League standings, and is 5-2 at the halfway point for just the second time in program history (2011) ... The 2011 Lions went on to post a 9-5 Ivy League record and finish third ... Columbia's best Ivy League finish was a tie for second in 2012, also with a 9-5 mark ... The Lions posted their first 3-0 Ivy League start in program history this season ... Both Columbia and Yale are two games back of Princeton, which remains undefeated (7-0).
SOME OF THE NATION'S BEST
• First-year Chichi Ikwuazom enters the weekend at No. 5 in the country in hitting percentage (.449) and No. 18 in blocks per set (1.43) ... It is Ikwuazom's first week in the NCAA's statistical rankings after meeting the minimum of playing in 66.7 percent of the team's sets ... Senior libero Cassie Wes checks in at No. 8 in digs per set (5.30), and was ranked as high as No 2 on Oct. 2 ... First-year Grace Campbell is ranked No. 72 nationally in assists per set (10.25) ... Ikwuazom, Wes and Campbell all lead the Ivy League.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
• Wes is third in program history in career digs and enters this weekend with 1,165 ... The career record is 1,408, accomplished by Ellie Thomas (2006-09) ... Katie Beauregard is second all-time with 1,248 from 1999-2002 ... Wes became the fourth Lion in program history to record 1,000 career digs on September 17 against Fordham.
TAKING ADVANTAGE AT HOME
• Columbia played 12 consecutive home matches from September 9 - October 8, and posted a record of 9-3 ... The homestand included the Columbia Classic (Sep. 9-10), the Lion Invitational (Sep. 16-17) and its first five Ivy League matches ... It marked the longest homestand in program history in terms of both matches played (12) and total days (30).
SIX-PACK OF WINS
• Columbia won six straight matches from September 16 - October 1, marking the longest winning streak since stringing together a program-best nine straight victories in September of 2010 ... This year's streak began with a 3-0 sweep of Providence, and followed with two more sweeps over Hartford and Fordham ... The Lions won their Ivy League opener on September 24 by coming back from two sets down and saving three match points to defeat Cornell ... The streak reached six the following weekend when Columbia defeated Yale in five and Brown in three.
