NEW HAVEN, Conn.—With four consecutive victories, Columbia's doubles team of sophomore Star Makarome and junior Alexandra Solovyev advanced to Monday's semifinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northeast Regional Championships Presented by Oracle. The five-day event, held Oct. 20-25 at Yale University's Cullman Heyman Tennis Center, will begin its fourth day of competition with the semifinal round on Monday. Championships are slated for Tuesday.
Winners of two matches on Sunday, Makarome and Solovyev will face Penn's doubles team of Kana Daniel and Ashley Zhu tomorrow at 10 a.m. The winner will advance to the Northeast Regional Doubles Title Match. On Sunday, Makarome and Solovyev defeated the St. John's doubles team of Anna Morozova/Jessica Livianu, 8-6, to advance to the bracket's quarterfinal round of eight. The duo then advanced to the competition's final four with an 8-3 victory over Yale's Madison Battaglia/Valerie Shklover.
Columbia's doubles team of freshman Ali Pollack and junior Rima Asatrian dropped an 8-3 decision to No. 1 seeded team of Gabriela Knutson/Valeria Salazar. Sophomore Andrea Kevakian was eliminated in singles competition after a 6-4, 6-1 loss to No. 1 seeded Asiya Dair of Boston College.
