Cambridge, Mass. – The Columbia men's swimming & diving team took on a veteran Harvard squad on Friday, Nov. 18 at Blodgett Pool in the Crimson's home opener. Harvard was dominant in their sole Ivy League dual meet at home downing the Lions 190-102, behind victories in 14 of 16 events.
The Lions pair of first-place crowns on the day came on the boards as Jayden Pantel continues his dominance this season. Pantel swept both the three-meter and one-meter dives for the fourth-straight meet this year. In the three-meter dive, the junior surpassed the 400-point mark for the second-consecutive contest with a winning score of 404.18. The victory also marked his 25th-straight win in the three-meter dive to remain unbeaten in his career in dual-meet action, including back-to-back 11-0 seasons in his rookie and sophomore campaigns.
A score of 343.88 delivered Pantel the crown in the one-meter dive as he continues to spread his dominance to that event. First-year Shinya Kondo also placed third in the three-meter event for the Lions for the second-straight meet with a score of 330.00, just .30 points away from a second-place finish.
In the pool, the Lions saw some impressive performances by first-year Nian-Guo Liu. Liu grabbed a pair of runner-up finishes with season-best times of 4:28.17 in the 500 freestyle and 1:37.52 in the 200 freestyle. Terry Li also collected points for the Lions with third-place finishes in both the 100 butterfly (48.98) and 200 butterfly (1:50.01).
The Lions (2-2, 1-2 Ivy) will be back in action on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. as they hosts Bucknell in their home opener in Uris Pool.
