STONY BROOK, N.Y. — The Columbia women's basketball team was unable to come away with its third consecutive road victory, falling at Stony Brook, 55-53, Tuesday night at Island Federal Credit Union Arena.
Columbia (2-2) led for more than 28 minutes, but never by more than six points. The Lions carried a 53-50 edge into the game's final minute before Kori Bayne-Walker hit a 3-pointer to level the score with 41 seconds remaining. After Columbia missed on a 3-point attempt to regain the lead, Stony Brook (1-3) got the ball and Bayne-Walker got to the foul line with 7.1 left, sinking both free throws to put the Seawolves on top.
The Lions called time to set up a potential game-tying or game-winning shot. Still with three fouls to give, Stony Brook fouled the Lions on three straight inbounds plays to drain the clock to 2.1 seconds. Columbia nearly lost the ball on its next play and was left with one final opportunity with the clock at 0.2 seconds. Junior Camille Zimmerman's desperation tip shot missed off the backboard.
Columbia outrebounded Stony Brook 41-26, including 17-10 on the offensive glass, but was only able to generate 11 second-chance points. Stony Brook edged the Lions 43 percent to 40 percent from the field. Each team took 14 attempts from beyond the arc, with Stony Brook connecting on five and Columbia on three. The Seawolves also won the turnover battle, 16-11.
Senior Tori Oliver led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Zimmerman joined Oliver in double figures with 15 points, adding a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Josie Little added to Columbia's large rebounding margin with six boards.
For Stony Brook, Bayne-Walker and Lauren Williams each scored a game-high 15 points. Christa Scognamiglio completed a trio of Seawolves in double figures with 10 and led her team with five rebounds. Bayne-Walker added a game-high five assists.
After playing their last three games on the road, Columbia returns to Levien Gymnasium on Sunday to take on Colgate. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
