NEW YORK — The Columbia volleyball team (11-9, 6-4 Ivy) hosts Dartmouth (8-13, 1-9 Ivy) and Harvard (6-13, 4-6 Ivy) for its final home weekend of the 2016 season. The Lions welcome the Big Green to Levien Gymnasium on Friday for a 7 p.m. match, followed by a 5 p.m. start on Saturday against the Crimson. Senior Day is set for Saturday, highlighted by a pregame ceremony to honor the careers of Sarah Gurbach, Zoe Jacobs, Kesi Neblett and Cassie Wes.
TOP NEWS/NOTES
SENIOR DAY
• The careers of Columbia's senior class will be honored for Senior Day on Saturday ... The senior class is made up of defensive specialist Sarah Gurbach, outside hitter Zoe Jacobs, middle hitter Kesi Neblett and libero Cassie Wes ... A pregame ceremony will be held prior Saturday's 5 p.m. start against Harvard.
IVY LEAGUE UPDATE
• Columbia is third in the Ivy League standings at 6-4, two games back of Yale and three back of first-place Princeton (10-0) ... Columbia's best Ivy League mark is 9-5, doing so in both 2011 and 2012 ... Columbia's best Ivy League finish was a tie for second in 2012 ... The Lions posted their first 3-0 Ivy League start in program history this season and are 3-4 since.
WES SETS ANOTHER RECORD
• Senior libero Cassie Wes recorded a career-high 33 digs in only three sets last Friday (Oct. 28) in a sweep of Brown, setting the program record for digs in a three-set match ... Her 33 digs also rank third in program history for any match, behind Cassie Ligh's 35 in five sets from 2006 and Charlee Dyroff's 39 in five sets from 2011 ... Wes's performance helped the Lions to their first road win against Brown since 2012.
WES CHASING MORE
• Senior libero Cassie Wes enters the weekend with 392 digs this season, which currently ranks sixth in program history for a single season ... Last season, Wes recorded 434 digs, which ranks second all-time ... Wes has a chance to break the single-season record of 473 held by Ellie Thomas from 2009, needing to average just over 20 digs per match through the final four matches of the season in order to do so ... The Atherton, Calif., native also comes into the weekend with 1,239 career digs, which is third all-time and nine behind Katie Beauregard (1999-02) for second (1,248 digs) ... The career record is 1,408, held by Ellie Thomas (2006-09) ... Wes became the fourth Lion in program history to record 1,000 career digs on September 17 against Fordham.
SOME OF THE NATION'S BEST
• Senior libero Cassie Wes climbed all the way to No. 3 in the NCAA in digs per set (5.33) this season following her performance last weekend ... Wes was sixth heading into the weekend and has been ranked as high as No. 2 (Oct. 2) ... First-year Chichi Ikwuazom enters the weekend at No. 6 in the country in hitting percentage (.422) and No. 16 in blocks per set (1.43) ... First-year Grace Campbell is ranked No. 78 nationally in assists per set (10.11) ... Ikwuazom, Wes and Campbell all lead the Ivy League.
TAKING ADVANTAGE AT HOME
• The Lions return to Levien Gymnasium for the first time since October 8, where they have been successful this season with a record of 9-3 … Columbia played 12 consecutive home matches from September 9 - October 8 ... The homestand included the Columbia Classic (Sep. 9-10), the Lion Invitational (Sep. 16-17) and its first five Ivy League matches ... It marked the longest homestand in program history in terms of both matches played (12) and total days (30).
ABOUT THE OPPONENT
SCOUTING THE BIG GREEN
• Dartmouth (8-13, 1-9 Ivy) enters the weekend looking to climb out of the Ivy League cellar ... The Big Green earned their lone conference victory on October 14 at home against Cornell, snapping an eight-match losing streak that dated back to September 16 ... Dartmouth has lost three straight overall since its last victory, a 3-1 non-conference triumph over Bryant, and is 1-6 this season on the road, winning at Sacred Heart on opening weekend (Sep. 3) ... They rank last in the Ivy League in hitting percentage (.154) and seventh in kills per set (11.45) and assists per set (10.45) ... Dartmouth is No. 2 in the Ivy League and No. 44 nationally in opponent hitting percentage (.171), and also ranks 43rd nationally in digs per set (16.36) ... Freshman Corinne Cox is fifth in the conference and 119th in the NCAA in aces per set (0.34) ... The attack is led by Emily Astarita with 223 kills and a per-set average of 2.90.
INSIDE THE DARTMOUTH SERIES
• Dartmouth swept the season series last year, marking back-to-back wins over the Lions for the first time since 2009 ... Columbia avenged itself three weeks ago in Hanover, taking down the Big Green in four sets ... Prior to last season, Columbia had won 10 of 11 from 2010-14, including five straight in Hanover ... The Lions will be loking for their first season sweep since 2014 ... Dartmouth holds a 24-21 all-time series edge.
SCOUTING THE CRIMSON
• Harvard (6-13, 4-6 Ivy) is playing on the road for the first time in nearly a month after playing five straight Ivy League matches at home ... The Crimson went 2-3 on the homestand, defeating Columbia and Dartmouth while falling to Cornell, Penn and Princeton ... Harvard nearly handed Princeton its first Ivy League loss in its last outing, but fell to the 10-0 Tigers in five ... The Crimson are 2-5 this season on the road with a 2-3 road record in the Ivy League ... Harvard ranks last in the Ivy League in aces per set (1.04) and opponent hitting percentage (.232), while ranking second in blocks per set (2.19) and third in assists per set (11.59) ... Senior Corinne Bain is fifth in the nation in triple-doubles with five, including one last Saturday against Princeton (20 kills, 24 assists, 12 digs) ... • Despite Harvard holding a 37-15 all-time lead, the series has been contested fairly even since 2010 ...
