
Columbia Shines In Home Victory Over Princeton

NEW YORK – For the second-consecutive meeting in Uris pool, the Columbia men's swimming & diving team took down the Princeton Tigers on Friday, Dec.9 with a 167.5-132 victory.The Lions won 9 of 16 events en route to its first Ivy League home win of the season to improve to 1-2 in conference play and 3-2 overall in dual-meet action.
With a clutch performance in the final round of the three-meter dive, Jayden Pantel kicked the night off with a victory behind a first-place total of 387.75. Pantel earned his 27th-straight win in the three-meter dive to remain unbeaten in his career in dual-meet action, including back-to-back 11-0 seasons in his rookie and sophomore campaigns. He added a one-meter dive runner-up finish with a score of 348.15.
Columbia started the night off with a bang by winning seven of the opening eight events. The 200 medley relay squad of Cole Stevens, Jae Park, Terry Li and Mark Gullick combined for a first-place time of 1:29.90. Eric Ng led a Columbia 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000 freestyle with a top-time of 9:26.89, followed by Brian Tsau at 9:36.68 and Jack Foster at 9:40.39. The Lions swept again in the 200 freestyle with Nian-guo grabbing the crown in a time of 1:38.23. Nikita Bondarenko followed in second place at 1:38.23 and Erek Cox placed third at 1:41.83.
Next, Michal Zyla earned first-place points in the 100 backstroke in 50.09, edging teammate Cole Stevens who clocked in at 50.13. Jae Park led all swimmers with a 55.62 performance in the 100 breaststroke, along with a runner-up finish by Jack smith at 56.37.
In the 50 free, Hank Gullick won a touch finish at 20.47 over teammate Kevin Frifeldt who clocked in at 20.50. Jae Park picked up a 200 breaststroke crown in 2:01.62 with Jack Smith in runner-up at 2:02.32. Shane Brett also delivered a 200 I.M. win with a first-place time of 1:52.41.
Up next, the Lions will continue Ivy League play in their return from the winter break with a trek to Ithaca to face Cornell on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m.
