HANOVER, N.H. - It took two matches in one day, but the Columbia women's tennis team has earned the ECAC Championship after wins over No. 32 Dartmouth and Harvard today in New Hampshire.
The victory marks the second time in three years the Lions came through with an ECAC Championship, as Columbia was a runner-up a season ago, after earning the 2014 title. With the pair of wins, the Lions improve to 4-2 on the season.
After a power outage suspended play in last night's match against Dartmouth, the Lions and the Big Green took the court at 8:30 this morning to resume play.
Columbia held strong against the home team, taking two of three matches in doubles play to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Dartmouth came back to fight in singles play, but only was able to earn wins in three of six matches as the Lions held on for the win.
Kanika Vaidya was able to escape with a 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 1 match, while the No. 4 and No. 5 matches also went to the Lions. Alexandra Solovyev was a 7-5, 6-4 winner, Andrea Kevakian went to three sets in a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 win.
Columbia then advanced on to play Harvard in the Championship match, escaping with a 4-2 win.
The Lions were once again dominant in doubles, when the Asatrian/Solovyev team knocked off Lee/Oosterhout in the No. 1 match, and Makarome/Kevakian were victorious in the No. 3 match, 6-3.
Vaidya, Star Makarome, and Solovyev earned singles wins, giving Columbia the team title. The match sets up Columbia well for the rest of the season, as all seven competing teams were from the Ivy League.
Columbia is back in action on Valentine's Day with a home match against Kentucky.
