Margot Phanthala Shines at ITA All-American Championships

Sophomore defeats three ranked opponents
CARY, N.C. – Columbia women's tennis had a strong showing at the ITA All-American Championships led by sophomore Margot Phanthala last weekend. Phanthala, a native of Paris, France, advanced to the consolation round of 16 and posted three wins over ranked opponents.
Phanthala opened with a 7-5, 6-1 loss to No. 24 Helena Buchwald of South Carolina in the Round of 64 before responding with three consecutive victories. She defeated No. 52 Gian Octa of Boston College, 7-6, 6-2, and No. 15 Emilija Tverijonaite of Arizona State, 6-4, 7-5.
Phanthala continued her run with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 11 Jana Salah of Florida to advance to the consolation Round of 16. She concluded her tournament with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 loss to No. 53 Zuzanna Kubacha of Baylor.
In pre-qualifying singles, Kenzie Nguyen had a tremendous showing in her collegiate debut. She advanced through three rounds, defeating Kenzie Erickson of Baylor, 6-2, 6-3; Sofia Maria Barbulescu of Richmond, 6-2, 6-3; and Anna-Marie Weissheim of Washington, 3-6, 6-3, 2-0 (ret.).
Nguyen advanced to qualifying singles, where she fell to Olivia Traynor of Michigan, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Nguyen and Amy Lee also competed in qualifying doubles, falling to Ohio State's Cau and Nishino, 6-4, 6-3.
Lee split her pre-qualifying singles matches, falling to Cayetana Gay of TCU, 7-6 (5), 6-3, before responding with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Klara Kajabova of Alabama.
Gayathri Krishnan also competed in pre-qualifying singles, opening with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Charlotte Keitel of San Diego before falling to Patricija Paukstyte of Georgia, 6-2, 6-2.
Columbia returns to action at the Fordham Four Invite. The three-day tournament begins on Friday, October 2 and runs through Sunday, October 4.
