PHILADELPHIA – The Columbia lightweight varsity eight came into the weekend tied for the No. 2 national ranking with Yale and the competition between the crews did not disappoint. However, the Lions suffered their first defeat of the season to the Bulldogs in the main event.
Yale turned in a time of 5:32.6 on the Schuykill River with Columbia crossing the tape just two seconds later. The Lions finished in front of Penn by 16 seconds to round out the varsity eight race.
The Lions fell to the Bulldogs in both the second and third varsity eight races. Columbia dropped a seven-second decision in the second varsity eight and was edged by three seconds in the third varsity eight.
Columbia will return to action next Saturday, April 23 against MIT and Cornell for the Geiger Cup in Ithaca, N.Y.
