NEW YORK — The Columbia volleyball team will welcome SIU Edwardsville, Manhattan and Bryant to Levien Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday for the Columbia Classic. The round-robin style tournament will feature six matches, with three scheduled for each day.
Competition begins Friday at noon with the Lions (0-3) taking on SIU Edwardsville (2-3) in the 2016 home opener. SIUE will remain on the court to face Bryant (3-6) at 4:30 p.m., followed by the final matchup of day one, featuring Columbia and Manhattan (0-7) at 7 p.m.
Saturday's action gets under way at 10 a.m., with SIUE facing Manhattan. The Lions then take the court for their final match of the weekend at 1 p.m., against Bryant. The tournament concludes at 5 p.m., with Manhattan taking on Bryant.
All six matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
SIU Edwardsville (2-3)
The Cougars snapped a three-match losing streak by defeating Evansville in three sets last Saturday. Two of SIUE's three losses have come in five sets, including last Friday against Green Bay and on August 27 against Toledo. SIUE opened the season by defeating Wright State on the road in four.

The Jaspers are winless through the first seven matches this season, with five of their seven losses coming in three sets. Manhattan began the season at the Spartan Invitational, hosted by San Jose State, falling to UMass Lowell, Providence and SJSU in straight sets. Last weekend, the Jaspers were at the Hartford Invitational, where they fell to Central Connecticut, Hartford and Rhode Island.

The Bulldogs snapped a five-match losing streak on Tuesday when they hosted New Hampshire and won in straight sets. Prior to that, Bryant had won just three sets combined in losses to Rutgers, Quinnipiac, UMass Lowell, Fairfield and Brown. Bryant started the year 2-1 on opening weekend (Aug. 26-27) by defeating Hartford and Rider, both in three sets.

WES DIGGING UP THE LIST: Senior libero Cassie Wes enters the tournament with 894 career digs and is 11 shy of entering the program's all-time top five. The No. 5 spot is currently held by Cassie Bryan, who posted 905 digs from 2000-03. Only three Lions have ever eclipsed 1,000 career digs. The last to do so was Megan Gaughn with 1,065 from 2009-12.
YOUTHFUL LIONS: Columbia boasts a lot of youth with 11 underclassmen on its roster of 16. The largest class is the freshman class with six, all of whom made their collegiate debuts in San Francisco last weekend. Freshman Grace Campbell leads the team in assists with 34 while averaging 6.80 per set.
