PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A pair of goals and a shutout in net helped the Columbia men's soccer team pick up a 2-0 road win tonight at Rutgers. With the victory, the Lions improve to 7-2-3 overall, while the Scarlet Knights drop to 4-12-1.
In the first half, the Lions got on the board after a Rutgers foul set up a free kick for John Denis. The sophomore stepped up and sent the ball into the back of the net from the top right of the box to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.
Denis, Avi Eller, and Nike Azuma all added shots in the first half, but the Scarlet Knights held off the Lions, who posted a 1-0 advantage after the first 45 minutes.
After eight unsuccessful shot attempts by Columbia to start the second half, the Lions once again were able to break through on an attempt by Arthur Bosua. The senior chased down a cross in the box and tried a bicycle kick attempt that was blocked, but the rebound kick was gathered and sent through for the goal. Bosua's connection was his seventh of the season.
Even with a 2-0 lead in the 73rd minute, Columbia kept the aggression on the offensive side of the ball, proven a pair of shots by Azuma and another from Kynan Rocks, while the Lions were able to keep the Scarlet Knights from taking an attempt.
The shutout victory for Dylan Castanheira and the rest of the back line was the seventh Columbia clean sheet of the season. The Lions surrendered just two shots in the game, as Castanheira saved the lone shot on goal.
Up next, Columbia welcomes Yale (4-7-1, 1-2-1 Ivy) to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
