PHILADELPHIA — Junior Camille Zimmerman continued to state her case for Ivy League Player of the Year, netting a game-high 31 points in Columbia's 68-59 loss to Ivy League-leading Penn Saturday night at the Palestra.
Zimmerman shot 10 for 23 from the field and a perfect 10 for 10 at the charity stripe. The Tempe Prep product scored nine first-quarter points to help Columbia go on top and was good for another 12 in the fourth quarter as the Lions tried to battle back. She added seven rebounds, three steals and an assist.
Senior Tori Oliver scored 11 points and came up one rebound shy of a double-double. She added a game-high four assists and put together her second multi-block game of the season. Sophomores Paulina Koerner and Emily Surloff combined for 13 points.
Penn (17-7, 10-1 Ivy) put three in double figures, led by Michelle Nwokedi's double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Kasey Chambers scored 11 while Anna Ross chipped in with 10. Penn shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, sinking 9 of 18 attempts.
Columbia (13-12, 3-9 Ivy) used an 8-0 run between the first and second quarters to build a 17-13 lead. Zimmerman scored six of the eight points and earned the assist on a basket by senior Devon Roeper.
Penn responded with an 8-0 run to regain the lead, but the Lions stayed within striking distance. Surloff hit two big 3-pointers, slicing the margin to a single point each time, Oliver tied the game at 29 with 2:10 before halftime.
The Quakers scored the final basket of the half to take a 32-29 edge into the locker rooms. The Lions shot 46 percent in the opening half, outrebounded Penn, 16-11, and had eight assists on their 12 made baskets. Zimmerman led all scorers with 13.
It remained a tight game until Penn went on a 10-2 run over a span of 3 minutes, 25 seconds during the third quarter. Beth Brzozowski's 3-pointer at the 2:23 mark capped the surge with the Quakers ahead, 47-34.
The Lions went down by as many as 14, but put together one final push in the fourth quarter to get back in it. Down by 12, sophomore Paulina Koerner sparked the rally by splashing home a 3-ball. Columbia went on to score six of the next seven points, capping a 9-1 run down by four, 53-49, with more than five minutes still to play.
Chambers retaliated with a 3-pointer and three minutes later the Quakers had rebuilt a double-digit lead. Columbia began fouling with 2:14 remaining to extend the game, but Penn hit 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch, which was enough to hang on.
Columbia heads back to the Big Apple next weekend for the final two games of the regular season. The Lions host Brown Friday night at 7 p.m., followed by Senior Night on Saturday against Yale at 6 p.m.
