NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Junior Camille Zimmerman scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Columbia women's basketball team to victory, 72-68, over Yale Friday night in Ivy League play at Lee Amphitheater.
Columbia (12-6, 2-3 Ivy) led the majority of the game and came up with the timely baskets it needed to hold off each of Yale's rallies. After the Bulldogs scored the first six points of the second half to take their first lead since the opening minutes, Columbia answered with big shot after big shot to regain control. An 8-0 run sparked by an Emily Surloff triple and a Devon Roeper 3-point play put the Lions back in front by nine.
Yale (10-8, 1-4 Ivy) sliced the lead to one with a run to begin the fourth quarter, but, again, Columbia responded. The Lions scored the next five points to go on top by two possessions and regained a comfortable, 67-58, advantage when sophomore Paulina Koerner drained a 3-pointer with 1:50 to go. The Bulldogs gave one last effort to chip away in the final minute, but Columbia hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal its second road win of the Ivy League season.
“It's always good anytime you can come away with a win on the road,” said head coach Megan Griffith. “We're doing it in very exciting fashion over the last two weeks, but it's a positive sign. It shows that we're battle-tested and ready to quickly turn around and get the next one. As long as we can keep this momentum, keep learning from our mistakes and growing, we'll be in good shape.”
Zimmerman became one of Columbia's top-five all-time scorers in the win. The Tempe Preparatory Academy product came into the game 13 points away and finished with her 13th 20-point game of the season. She now has 1,193 career points, joining senior Tori Oliver (1,267 points) as the two active Lions to rank among the program's top-five in scoring.
Columbia also got another big game from senior Devon Roeper. After averaging 16.5 points and 10 rebounds off the bench last weekend, the San Diego native finished off Friday night's victory with 11 points and team-high nine boards, including five on the offensive end. Sophomore Paulina Koerner scored 10 points and tallied a game-high six assists.
“Devon knows she's capable of doing it, but she's a hard critic and can't let herself get in her own way,” Griffith added. “Once she's gotten the confidence and knows this is where she should be and how she should be playing, I think she's going to have a really special senior year.”
Yale got a team-high 21 points and game-high 12 rebounds from Jen Berkowitz, who had a basket waved off with 7:03 remaining that would have tied the game at 53. Instead, the officiating crew went to the monitors and assessed a flagrant foul to Berkowitz, whose elbow struck Zimmerman in the face on the way to the basket. Instead of tying the game, the foul sent Zimmerman to the free throw line, where she buried both. A minute later, the Lions were back on top by eight.
Columbia outshot Yale 43 percent to 38 percent and came up big from 3-point land, draining 9 of 18 attempts. The Bulldogs tried to make up for it at the charity stripe, where they had 30 attempts, but they missed 11.
Berkowitz put the first points on the board for either side nearly three minutes into the opening quarter. Columbia responded with the next seven as Zimmerman connected from mid-range, Paige Tippet splashed a 3-ball and Oliver got free underneath.
A 10-2 run through the final minutes of the first quarter gave Columbia its first significant advantage. Zimmerman and Lee connected from long range on back-to-back possessions to open up an 18-11 lead. After Megan Gorman interrupted the run with a 3-point play, junior Alexa Giuliano and Roeper scored the game's next four points, helping the Lions take a 21-15 lead at the end of the quarter.
Columbia shot 53 percent in the opening quarter. Both teams cooled down in the second, with neither reaching the 10-point mark. Yale edged the Lions 8-7 to cut Columbia's lead to 28-23 at the half.
The offenses picked back up to begin the second half, with both teams connecting at over 50 percent in the third quarter and scoring 24 points apiece. Columbia maintained a 52-47 lead heading to the fourth and staved off each of Yale's threatening rallies.
The Lions head to Providence, Rhode Island, to complete their Ivy League weekend at Brown. Tip is set for 4 p.m. from the Pizzitola Sports Center.
