NEW YORK — In a hard-fought battle, the Columbia women's soccer team dropped a tight 1-0 decision to the visiting Princeton Tigers at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Lions fall to 6-6-1 overall with a 2-2-0 mark in Ivy League play, while Princeton moves to 8-3-2, 2-1-1 Ivy.
Â
"Princeton's a good team," said Columbia head coach
Tracey Bartholomew. "In the first half we were a little off, but we were a completely different team in the second half. The energy that we came out with was just great to see out of the team and I'm proud of that. We created a lot of chances, but just couldn't put one in the back of the net."
Â
The tensions were high from the start of the match as both teams tried to find offensive rhythm. It was Princeton who was able to break through in the 38th minute, as the Tigers put one past Columbia's senior goalkeeper
Sophie Whitehouse to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Â
"It's a tough goal to give up," said Bartholomew. "Off a throw in, to end up losing it and just give up a goal on that was tough to swallow. But Princeton came out hard and we weren't ready."
Â
Columbia came back firing in the second half, outshooting the Tigers 9-2 in the period including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal, but none would sneak through.
Â
Perhaps three of the Columbia's best scoring opportunities came from sophomore forward
Jordyn Geller who recorded four shots and two shots on goal in the contest. The Moorpark, California, native tallied both shots on goal in the second half, but Princeton goalkeeper Natalie Grossi was able to keep the clean sheet.
Â
Columbia will play its final home game of the 2018 season next weekend, facing off against Dartmouth on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 6 p.m. The match will serve as Columbia's Senior Day.
