Columbia Cruises Past Yale in 2-0 Shutout Victory

The Lions posted their second consecutive clean sheet with a 2-0 triumph over Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Columbia women's soccer team picked up another three points in Ivy League play on Saturday evening, winning its second consecutive league match in a 2-0 shutout victory against Yale.

The win moves Columbia to 8-6-1 overall with a 4-2-0 mark in conference play. Yale falls to 7-8-1, 1-5-0 Ivy.

"We had great energy and it was a team effort, especially the second half," said Columbia head coach Tracey Bartholomew. "First half for us, we scored, which was great, but it was a little bit frantic. A lot of transition moments back and forth. The second half we played a lot better and ended up winning some second balls and creating some good opportunities in terms of keeping the ball and getting the goal."

For the second consecutive game, first-year midfielder Jessica Schildkraut helped the Lions pull ahead early, this time with a goal in just the eighth minute of action. The defending Ivy League Rookie of the Week, Schildkraut took a cross from senior Emma Anderson before knocking it past Yale goalkeeper Maritza Grillo to give Columbia a 1-0 lead.

"Jess has been moving off the midfield really well," said Bartholomew. "We tried to get her a little bit higher up the field in this game. Emma played her a perfect ball and she just smacked it in. She worked so hard the entire game, played the whole game. It's great for her to get that good look like that and finish. It gives us momentum for us to have a goal up. Yale can score goals. They just make stuff happen, so we talked about trying to get a goal to get a jump up on them so we would feel a little bit of a relief."

In the 58th minute, junior forward Emily Koe sent a beautiful ball ahead to senior Amaris Hemmings who dribbled the ball into the back of the net to tack on the insurance goal. The goal marked Hemmings' second of the season, while Koe recorded her third assist of 2018.

In goal, senior keepers Sophie Whitehouse and Marie Matthews combined for a clean sheet as Matthews came in for the second 45 minutes of action. Each recorded a save in the victory.

Columbia will be back in action on Saturday, Nov. 3, traveling to Cambridge, Massachusetts, for the final regular season contest against Harvard. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
