PHILADELPHIA — In a battle between unbeaten Ivy League programs, the Penn Quakers batted in one goal in the 51st minute to edge out the Columbia women's soccer team, 1-0, on a soggy pitch at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia on Friday evening.

Columbia drops to 5-5-1 overall, 2-1 in Ivy League play, while Penn improves to 8-1-1, 2-0-1 Ivy.
 
"Every Ivy game is a tough battle," said Columbia head coach Tracey Bartholomew. "Today we faced a good Penn team that doesn't give up goals. We fought hard until the end, but we couldn't break them down. There is a lot to learn from this game. We must move forward and be better on both sides of the ball."

The Lions were able to limit the Quakers' possession time in the early goings as the defense was working hard to keep the ball on the right side of the pitch, but just after the halftime break Penn took a 1-0 lead as Breukelen Woodward tapped one in off a rebound. Penn would not relinquish its lead.
 
Columbia's best scoring opportunity came in the 15th minute, as senior Emma Anderson was wide open in the box and tried to put it past Penn goalkeeper Kitty Qu, but Qu made a diving save to keep the ball out of the net. Qu has yet to give up a goal through three Ivy contests.
 
Looking for the equalizer in the second half, Cayla Davis sent in a good ball from 20 yards out in the 68th minute, but it went wide right.
 
Seven different Lions recorded shots in the contest, tallying nine shots total and four shots on goal. Penn had 12 shots and three on goal.
 
Columbia will return home Monday, Oct. 8, welcoming in Lafayette for its final non-conference match of the season at 7 p.m.
