Columbia Falls on the Road to Colgate, 84-71

Madison Hardy notches second straight 17-point game, Madison Pack scores a career-high 14 points

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Colgate used a 59-point second half to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit and defeat the Columbia women's basketball team, 84-71, Sunday afternoon at Cotterell Court.

Columbia (2-4) took a 36-25 lead into the locker rooms after holding Colgate (2-3) to nine second-quarter points and 35 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes. The Raiders scored the first 11 points of the second half in a matter of 2:39 to tie the game and went on to complete a 20-2 run ahead 45-38 less than halfway into the period.

The Lions fought back and retook the lead when sophomore Madison Pack connected on her second triple of the period heading to the fourth quarter. Pack's third trey of the game made it a one-point game, 61-60, with 6:51 remaining, but Colgate scored the next eight points and never looked back, outscoring the Lions 34-18 in the fourth quarter to earn their second win of the season.

Rachel Thompson led the way for Colgate with a game-high 24 points, career-high 19 rebounds, career-high nine assists and five steals. She shot 7-of-11 from the floor and was 10-of-13 from the charity stripe, leading the Raiders to a 46-18 advantage in the paint. Senior Summer King also caused problems, finishing with 20 points – one off her career-high – including 14 a second half in which her team shot 56 percent from the floor.

Columbia saw most of its offensive successes come off its Ivy League-leading 3-point shooting. First-year Madison Hardy knocked down four triples on six attempts in the first half on the way to her second straight 17-point showing off the bench. Pack scored all of her career-high 14 points in the second half by going 4-for-5 from beyond the arc. Sophomore Riley Casey completed a trio of Lions that scored in double figures off the bench with 10 points by knocking down 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Columbia's bench outscored Colgate, 45-12.

First-year Sienna Durr was the lone Columbia starter in double figures, registering 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Rookie point guard Mikayla Markham was all over the stat sheet with seven assists, five points, two steals and two rebounds.

Colgate scored the first 11 points of the afternoon before the Lions got into the game. Hardy scored the first Columbia basket when she banked in a 3-pointer almost halfway through the period and followed with her second triple on the very next possession. The Lions ended an 8-0 run on a bucket by Sydney Brown and outscored Colgate 17-5 over the final five minutes to take a one-point lead into the second quarter.

Durr started the second quarter with a three and the Lions went on a 7-0 run midway through the period to take an 11-point lead, 31-20. Hardy buried her third triple of the afternoon before Durr followed with a bucket in transition to force the Raiders to burn a timeout. Colgate went over seven minutes without a field goal and Hardy's fourth 3-pointer of the half gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 36-23, less than a minute before halftime.

Columbia continues its three-game road trip on Thursday when it travels to Philadelphia for its first ever meeting with St. Joseph's. Tip from Hagan Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
