Fall Academic All-Ivy League Selections Announced

Ten Columbia University student-athletes were named to the 2018 Fall Academic All-Ivy League Team.
PRINCETON, N.J.—Ten Columbia University student-athletes were named to the 2018 Fall Academic All-Ivy League Team, league officials announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Earning Fall Academic All-Ivy League honors for Columbia were Dylan Castanheira (Men's Soccer), Ryan Gilbert (Football), Tyler Italiano (Men's Cross Country), Vana Markarian (Men's Soccer), Sean White (Football), Katie Dempsey (Field Hockey), Amalya Johnson (Women's Soccer), Libby Kokes (Women's Cross Country), Jennifer Trieschman (Field Hockey) and Kalie Wood (Volleyball). Two of the student-athletes earned the honor for the second time in their career including Castanheira and Dempsey.
Three Columbia teams—football, men's soccer and field hockey—had two honorees apiece, while four other teams including men's cross country, women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball had one representative each.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Ivy League squad, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team. The conference announces 10 Academic All-Ivy League selections (five men and five women) for each school after each of its three athletic seasons: fall, winter and spring.

Two-time CoSIDa Academic All-District selection (2017 and 2018) … First Team All-Ivy League selection as a senior safety in 2018 … Ranked No. 2 in the Ivy League and led the Lions for the second consecutive season in tackles with 89 (48 solo) … Also ranked No. 36 nationally in tackles and tied for the team lead in interceptions with two … Led Columbia in tackles in five of its 10 games and registered six double-digit tackle games … Earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 29 … In four-year, 33-game career, made 196 total tackles (108 solo), intercepted three passes, broke up nine passes, defended 12 passes, forced three fumbles and recovered a fumble in 20 starts … Concluded his career by starting 20 consecutive games at safety.
TYLER ITALIANO | Cross Country | Senior | Syosset, N.Y. | Major: Biological Studies
Placed 67th at the NCAA Regionals with a time of 34:32.0 … Was Columbia's second-highest finisher at Ivy League Heps, placing 15th in 25:01.9 … Led the Lions two times, at the Paul Short run, placing fifth overall (25:04) and seventh at the Princeton Invitational (24:16.1) … Posted a top-10 finish (eighth place) at the Iona Meet of Champions (25:34).
