Fall Academic All-Ivy League Selections Announced

Ten Columbia University student-athletes were named to the 2018 Fall Academic All-Ivy League Team.
PRINCETON, N.J.—Ten Columbia University student-athletes were named to the 2018 Fall Academic All-Ivy League Team, league officials announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Earning Fall Academic All-Ivy League honors for Columbia were Dylan Castanheira (Men's Soccer), Ryan Gilbert (Football), Tyler Italiano (Men's Cross Country), Vana Markarian (Men's Soccer), Sean White (Football), Katie Dempsey (Field Hockey), Amalya Johnson (Women's Soccer), Libby Kokes (Women's Cross Country), Jennifer Trieschman (Field Hockey) and Kalie Wood (Volleyball). Two of the student-athletes earned the honor for the second time in their career including Castanheira and Dempsey.
Three Columbia teams—football, men's soccer and field hockey—had two honorees apiece, while four other teams including men's cross country, women's cross country, women's soccer and volleyball had one representative each.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Ivy League squad, a student-athlete must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key reserve on his or her team. The conference announces 10 Academic All-Ivy League selections (five men and five women) for each school after each of its three athletic seasons: fall, winter and spring.

Second Team Scholar All-America Team honoree, the lone goalkeeper among the 28 players named to the team … Two-time Academic All-Ivy League selection (Fall 2018 and Fall 2017) … Three-time All-Ivy League selection (First Team in 2017 and 2018, Second Team in 2016) as a goalkeeper … Second Team All-Northeast Region honoree … Scholar All-East Region Team selection … Named 2018 Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year … Set school record for career shutouts (25) and set Ivy League record for career goals against average (0.513) … Finished with a 10-5-1 record and five shutouts during senior season … In 2018, started all 16 matches, allowed 13 goals for an 0.79 goals against average and finished year with an .812 save percentage … Helped the Lions finish second in the Ivy League with a 5-2 record … Allowed just eight goals in 18 matches, the No. 3 ranked goals against average in the nation as a junior in 2017 … Finished his junior year with a 12-3-3 overall record, 11 shutouts, 44 saves in 18 games and allowed just eight goals for a 0.43 GAA … Only surrendered three goals in the final 14 matches, all to ranked opponents (No. 20 Dartmouth and No. 1 Wake Forest) … Allowed only one penalty kick goal to Wake Forest, who had the nation's No. 1 scoring offense.
RYAN GILBERT | Football | Senior | Bellevue, Wash. | Major: Political Science
Two-time CoSIDa Academic All-District selection (2017 and 2018) … First Team All-Ivy League selection as a senior safety in 2018 … Ranked No. 2 in the Ivy League and led the Lions for the second consecutive season in tackles with 89 (48 solo) … Also ranked No. 36 nationally in tackles and tied for the team lead in interceptions with two … Led Columbia in tackles in five of its 10 games and registered six double-digit tackle games … Earned Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 29 … In four-year, 33-game career, made 196 total tackles (108 solo), intercepted three passes, broke up nine passes, defended 12 passes, forced three fumbles and recovered a fumble in 20 starts … Concluded his career by starting 20 consecutive games at safety.
TYLER ITALIANO | Cross Country | Senior | Syosset, N.Y. | Major: Biological Studies
Placed 67th at the NCAA Regionals with a time of 34:32.0 … Was Columbia's second-highest finisher at Ivy League Heps, placing 15th in 25:01.9 … Led the Lions two times, at the Paul Short run, placing fifth overall (25:04) and seventh at the Princeton Invitational (24:16.1) … Posted a top-10 finish (eighth place) at the Iona Meet of Champions (25:34).
VANA MARKARIAN | Soccer | Junior | Ottawa, Ontario, Canada | Major: Political Science
Second Team All-Ivy League selection as a defender … Three-time All-Ivy League recipient … Named to the Scholar All-East Region team … Scored two goals and added one assist from the backline … Helped Columbia post five shutouts and 0.79 goals against average for the year.
SEAN WHITE | Football | Senior | Friendswood, Texas | Major: Political Science
Second Team All-Ivy League selection as an outside linebacker … Ranked No. 5 in the Ivy League and No. 2 on the Lions in tackles with 81 (42 solo) and registered 2.0 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss with two pass breakups … Finished the year with three double-digit tackle games … Led the Lions in tackles in four games … Registered six or more tackles in nine of 10 games on the year … Played in 32 career games with 20 starts at outside linebacker and totaled 131 total tackles (65 solo), 8.5 tackles for loss for 18 yards, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups in four-year career.

First Team All-Ivy League selection … Named to the USTFCCCA All-Region Team … Finished fourth at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships with a time of 20:53.4 … Helped guide Columbia to its second straight Ivy League championship title and first Northeast Region title since 2005 … Finished 50th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships with a time of 20:43.6 … Finished fifth at the Princeton Invitational with a time of 21:11.6.
JENNIFER TRIESCHMAN | Field Hockey | Junior | Houston, Texas | Major: Biological Studies
First Team All-Mideast Region … Second Team All-Ivy League selection … Led Lions with nine goals and 22 points on year … Tied for fifth in the Ivy League in goals and sixth in points … Posted two key second half goals against Fairfield in a come-from-behind win for Columbia.
KALIE WOOD | Volleyball | Junior | San Diego, Calif. | Major: Biological Studies
Played and started in all 24 matches in 2018 … Registered 362 digs, 4.16 digs per set, 29 aces and 0.33 aces per set … Ranked No. 1 in the Ivy League in total aces and No. 2 in aces per set … Ranked No. 4 in the Ivy League in both digs and digs per set … Recorded double-figure digs in 21 of 24 matches, including a double-double on Nov. 9 at Brown (13 assists) … Tallied her second career 30-dig match in a five-set victory at Delaware (Sept. 8).
