Men's Basketball Drops 74-62 Decision to Penn

NEW YORK—An 18-0 second-half run and a 23-point performance off the bench by Devon Goodman helped Penn claim a 74-62 men's basketball victory over Columbia Friday evening at Levien Gymnasium.

Goodman, who scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, hit 5-8 3-point shots and eight of his 13 field goal attempts. Caleb Wood finished with 16 points and AJ Brodeur added 14.

Mike Smith scored 16 points and dished out six assists to lead Columbia. Nate Hickman finished with 13 points and Quinton Adlesh added 12 for the Lions.

With Columbia clinging to a 54-50 lead with 7:18 to play, Penn began its 18-0 run. Goodman started the rally with a 3-pointer, then converted a driving layup with 6:25 to play to give the Quakers a 55-54 lead. Following an offensive foul and turnover by Columbia, Wood hit a 3-pointer and Antonio Woods followed with two free throws for a six-point Quaker lead. Back-to-back layups by Brodeur and a steal and dunk by Brodeur gave Penn a 12-point lead with 3:24 to go. Foreman followed with a jumper and Penn held a 68-54 with 2:40 to play.

A Kyle Castlin 3-point play ended the run, but Columbia trailed by 11 points (68-57) with 1:48 to play.

Columbia led for 32 of the game's 40 minutes. Through the first half and most of the second half, every time Penn hit a shot to cut the margin, Columbia answered with a basket. Gabe Stefanini scored on a tip-in with 12:35 to go to preserve a 45-41 Columbia lead, two Smith free throws kept the score 47-41 and a Castlin backdoor layup off a beautiful pass from Smith gave the Lions a 49-45 lead with 10:31 to go. After a 3-pointer by Penn's Wood cut the Lion lead to one point, Smith answered with a driving layup and 3-point play and a Meisner jumper preserved Columbia's 54-50 lead with 7:18 to play.

But Columbia went scoreless and missed eight consecutive shots over the game's next 5:16 as Penn went on its 18-0 run.

Columbia led the entire first half and held off Penn for a 34-31 halftime lead. The Lions started the game on fire as they scored the first eight points as Hickman hit a layup and swished a 3-pointer from the corner and Mike Smith followed with a 3-pointer of his. A Quinton Adlesh 3-pointer gave Columbia a 17-6 lead with 12:38 to play in the first half.

The Lions overcame an 18-point first half performance by Penn's Goodman, who came off the bench to hit all four of his 3-point attempts. Columbia led by eight points (34-26) before Goodman scored the half's final five points. Hickman sparked the Columbia effort with 11 first half points.

For the game, Columbia shot just 41.8 percent (23-55) from the floor and hit a season-low four 3-pointers. The Lions also committed 17 turnovers to Penn's nine.

With the win, Penn (18-7 overall) remains in a first-place tie atop the Ivy League standings with Harvard at 8-1. Harvard defeated Brown 65-58 earlier Friday evening.

Columbia (6-16, 3-6 Ivy League) gets back in action Saturday evening when it hosts Princeton at 7 p.m. The contest will be televised live on SNY and on the Ivy League Network.
