Zimmerman Nets 31, Lions Fall to Hot-Shooting Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior Camille Zimmerman scored a season-high 31 points but the Columbia women's basketball team couldn't outshoot Harvard, as the Lions fell, 85-67, Friday evening at Lavietes Pavilion.

Zimmerman shot 10-of-19 from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point land. She had 20 of Columbia's 33 points at halftime after connecting on each of her first nine attempts from the field. Despite being limited to a single field goal in the second half, she made up for it by getting to the foul line eight times and connecting on all eight attempts. The Katrina McClain Award finalist also wrapped up her Ivy League-leading 10th double-double by going for a game-high 11 rebounds. She filled up the rest of the stat sheet with two steals, an assist and a block.

After trailing by as many as 16, Columbia (7-13, 1-4 Ivy) used a 10-0 third-quarter run to pull all the way back within four. Sophomore Maya Sampleton got it started before junior Abby Lee and senior Paige Tippet sank 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions. Sophomore Janiya Clemmons' jumper made it 52-48 just four minutes into the second half.

Harvard (12-6, 4-1 Ivy) responded with the next 13 points and never looked back. Nani Redford, Katie Benzan and Sydney Skinner all hit from long distance during the run. Skinner's triple after the Lions had not scored for more than five minutes put the Crimson up 17. They took a 16-point lead into the fourth and led by as many as 20 before the final horn.

Harvard shot 55.2 percent (37-67) to register the highest shooting percentage by a Columbia opponent all season. They put five in double figures, led by Katie Benzan's team-high 20 and Jeannie Boehm's 17. The sophomore duo combined to shoot 64 percent, including 8-of-11 from Benzan to go with five of Harvard's 21 assists. The Crimson also shot 47.4 percent (9-19) from three, including a 4-for-6 night out of Benzan, after Columbia had entered the game as one of the best 3-point defenses in the country at 27.9 percent.

Apart from Zimmerman's 31, Clemmons, Tippet and first-year Madison Pack each scored eight points. Clemmons set a new career-high with five assists and Sampleton matched her career-high of three steals. The Lions shot 40.4 percent (25-57) from the floor and hit 10-of-25 from beyond the arc, but were limited to 32.3 percent in a second half that saw Harvard shoot over 60 percent.

Columbia ends its stretch of eight of nine away from home on Saturday at Dartmouth. Tip from Leede Arena is scheduled for 5 p.m.
