NEW HAVEN, Conn. —Yale rallied from 15 down in the second half to defeat the Columbia women's basketball team, 66-59, Saturday evening at Lee Amphitheater.
Columbia (8-19, 2-10 Ivy) led 48-33 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Yale (15-10, 8-4 Ivy) scored the final seven points of the period and completed a 22-5 run on a jumper by Ellen Andrews to take a 55-53 lead with 4:21 left in the fourth.
Â
The Lions got two big 3-pointers from Madison Pack over the next couple of possessions. Her first gave Columbia the lead back and her second tied the game at 59 with 2:43 to go. However, the Lions did not score again and Yale netted the final seven points to walk away with the win.
Â
Senior Camille Zimmerman scored a team-high 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting and went for a game-high 11 rebounds to complete her 15th double-double of the season, top in the Ivy League. She also passed Gail Koziara (Dartmouth, 1978-82) for fifth on the Ivy League's all-time scoring list. Zimmerman will enter her final weekend with 1,937 career points.
Â
Joining Zimmerman in double figures were first-year Imani Whittington and sophomore Janiya Clemmons. Whittington came out on fire with eight first-quarter points and finished the night with 14 on 6-of-10 shooting. Clemmons scored an even 10 on 5-of-8 from the floor. Columbia finished the game with a 45.3-percent mark from the field, but hit just 32 percent in the second half.
Â
For Yale, Roxy Barahman led all scorers with 22 points. She scored 10 in the fourth quarter to lead the comeback. Seniors Jen Berkowitz (13) and Tamara Simpson (12) also reached double figures. Simpson and Barahman led the efforts on the glass with eight boards apiece.
Â
Columbia led for nearly 33 minutes, including all but 1:22 of the first half. Whittington scored eight of Columbia's first 10 points before going to the bench with two fouls. The Lions shot 69 percent and led by as many as five in the opening 10 minutes.
Â
The best defensive quarter of the night made it a 10-point lead at halftime. A 7-0 run with buckets by Zimmerman, Whittington and senior Jillian Borreson gave the Lions their first double-digit lead. Yale cut it back to five, but Columbia strung together eight more in a matter of three minutes to gain a 13-point edge. Yale scored just nine points in the quarter on 21-percent shooting.
Â
Columbia maintained a double-digit lead through the majority of the third quarter. Yale cut it to eight at the 6:12 mark, but the Lions answered with seven straight from Clemmons, Whittington and Zimmerman to take a 15-point lead.
Â
That's when Yale started to turn things around, cutting the margin to eight by the start of the fourth and rallying for a Senior Night victory.
Â
