BOSTON, MASS. - The Columbia heavyweight rowing team sets its sights on its second cup victory of the season when they head to the Charles River in the Alumni Cup Regatta. The Lions will take on MIT, Holy Cross, and Dartmouth Saturday, March 31.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Alumni Cup is awarded to the winner of the Varsity eight race between MIT and Columbia. The Lions have come out victorious in the last seven contests. Holy Cross joined the race in 2009, and the Dartmouth Big Green first appeared in 2012.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
The Lions opened their spring season with a win at home against Rutgers last weekend to secure the Collins Cup for the 14th consecutive year. Columbia led from start to finish in both the varsity and second varsity eight events.
MIT'S STATUS
MIT opened its spring season by dominating the US Coast Guard Academy on the Charles River last weekend. The Engineers swept all boat classes and ran away with wins by over 20 seconds in each category.
DARTMOUTH'S STATUS
The Big Green began their spring season at the Las Vegas Invitational in a two-day event last weekend. Dartmouth took on the reigning IRA National Champion, Washington, along with Oregon State and Santa Clara. They fell to the Huskies, but were able to post victories against Oregon State and Santa Clara.
HOLY CROSS' STATUS
The Alumni Cup is the spring debut for the Crusaders. In the fall, they raced at the Green Monster Regatta, the Princeton Chase, the Head of the Charles, and grabbed a win in the Varsity 8 at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta.
A LOOK BACK...
Rowing through tough weather conditions, Columbia swept MIT in all boat classes in head-to-head races to secure the Alumni cup for the seventh straight year. The Lions fell to Dartmouth in the first set of head-to-head races of the morning.
