LEONIA, N.J. - The Columbia lightweight rowing team makes its spring debut at home this weekend against Princeton. This is just the second year the Campbell Cup is being contested.
WHAT'S ON THE LINE
The Bill Campbell “67” Cup honors Columbia Trustees' Chair William V. Campbell for his lifetime commitment to Columbia University and its athletics program. Campbell, the former captain and head coach of Columbia Football, was one of the most passionate supporters of Columbia and Ivy League athletics, His leadership and dedication to Columbia are unparalleled. In recognition of his devotion and contributions to Columbia Athletics, Campbell's uniform number 67 has been retired in perpetuity throughout the Columbia Athletics program.
COLUMBIA'S STATUS
Columbia comes in ranked No. 6 in the nation, bringing back five varsity eight crew members from last year's boat which posted a fourth-place finish at Sprints and a 6th place finish at IRAs. In the fall, the Lions made their lone appearance at the 53rd Head of the Charles with entries in the varsity eight and the varsity four. The varsity four captured bronze to highlight the competition for Columbia rowing.
PRINCETON'S STATUS
The Tigers come into this weekend ranked 2nd in the nation. Princeton began its spring season last weekend with wins in the Varsity eight against both Navy and Georgetown to reclaim the Murtaugh Cup and retain the Fosburgh Cup respectively.
A LOOK BACK...
Princeton came away with a win in the inaugural Campbell cup, edging the Lions in three races and snapping a five-race losing streak in head-to-head competition.
