Columbia was eliminated from the event by a mixed boat from Cambridge and Leander. The Lions will race in the Prince Albert Challenge tomorrow morning at Henley
HENLEY-ON-THAMES – The Columbia lightweight rowing team fell to a mixed crew from Cambridge University and Leander Club in the first heat of the Visitors' Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta Thursday. The Lions still have a boat alive in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup and will race against the National University of Ireland, Galeway Friday at 5:10 a.m. eastern time.
Out of the gate, Columbia, who was racing without a coxswain, veered to the right side of its lane, allowing Cambridge/Leander to open up an early lead. The Lions quickly straightened back out in relatively short order, but the deficit widened to open water and Cambridge/Leander went on for a three and one-quarter-length victory.
"Going up against this crew was going to be a difficult task even if we didn't have issues at the start," commented head coach Nich Lee Parker. "That was a really accomplished and strong boat that we were up against. It would have been great to see how we stacked up with a cleaner race, however, I'm really proud of the effort they put forth after that. It was a pretty quick recovery and they did everything in their power to get back into it."
