O'Brien, Micham Win Events At Great Dane Classic

A pair of events went to the Columbia track & field team, as the Lions were back in action during the Great Dane Classic today at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – A pair of events went to the Columbia track & field team, as the Lions were back in action during the Great Dane Classic today at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Senior Robert O'Brien came away with the pole vault on the men's side this Saturday, while Lauren Micham was first in the 60m hurdles for the women.
On his first attempt of the afternoon, O'Brien matched a season best when he cleared 4.80m. Teammate Ben Poth was able to get over 4.50m on his first attempt, taking fourth place on the afternoon.
Micham was one of two Lions that made the finals of the 60m Hurdles, joining her sophomore classmate Simone Kirton. In a tight finish at the line, Micham edged a pair of Albany runners in 8.80 seconds to take the tape, as Kirton claimed seventh in 8.89.
The men's team also had a pair of third place finishers on the afternoon in Daniel Igbokwe and Jack Pihlkar. Igbokwe was third in the triple jump, leaping out to 14.62m (47-11.75), while Pihlkar took third in the weight throw with a 17.47m (61-5.75) personal best.
On the women's side, Kali Hatcher was second among collegiate competitors in the triple jump, putting up an 11.68m (38-4) mark. The first year also was fifth in the long jump, going 5.65m (18-7).
The women also had Iman Sule take third in the 60m (8.02) and fourth in the 500m (1:15.40), while Terri Turner was also fourth in the 1,000m at 2:56.99.
Columbia hosts its first of two home matches next Friday, Jan. 18, when Dartmouth and Yale come to the New York City Armory for a tri-meet.
