Lions to travel to Lisbon, Portugal from Jan. 2-9 for seven-day foreign competition trip.
LISBON, Portugal—The Columbia University women's golf team will travel to Portugal for a seven-day foreign competition trip from January 2-9, Columbia Women's Golf Coach Amy Weeks officially announced this afternoon. The Lions departed for Lisbon, Portugal earlier this morning and will return to New York on Wednesday, January 9.
The trip will include competition stops the Dom Pedro Old Course (Friday, Jan. 4), San Lorenzo Golf Club (Saturday, Jan. 5), Monte Rei Golf Club (Sunday, Jan. 6) and Oitavos Dunes (Tuesday, Jan. 8). Three of the four courses were listed on the PGA's top seven must-play golf courses in Portugal (link). The Lions will play a "friendly match" on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at the Oitavos Dunes. In addition, the Lions will have the opportunity to experience Portuguese culture as the team will tour the city of Lisbon, take a cruise to Faro Island, hike San Lorenzo Estuaries and Beach, go on a kayak tour, explore Cascais and take a tour of the Pena Palace.
"We are extremely excited about the opportunity to visit and experience Portugal," Weeks said. "We will play four days of golf on some of Portugal's most spectacular golf courses. This should be a great precursor to our spring season. We would like to thank all of the donors, alumni, parents and all of our program supporters who contributed for this trip and made it possible."
Once every four years, the National Collegiate Athletic Association and Council of Ivy Group Presidents allow teams to travel abroad for a foreign tour. This unique opportunity is meant to enhance a student-athlete's experience during a collegiate career by exposing them to an experience that creates a life-long memory.
Weeks is in her fifth season as Columbia's head women's golf coach. Along with Weeks, all eight Columbia golfers will travel to Portugal including sophomore Kim Chiang, junior Emily Chu, senior Amy Ding, first-year Alexis Florio, sophomore Katie Lee, first-year Marlene Tartaro, first-year Jennifer Wang and sophomore Qingyi Symba Xu. Also making the trip is Associate Athletics Director for Enrichment Services Jessica DePalo.
