Lions finish 11th in competitive field
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Led by a pair of top-30 finishes by sophomore Christine Chang and first year Kristina Xu, the Columbia women's golf team finished 11th at the Valspar Augusta Invitational. The tournament was held on Saturday and Sunday at Forest Hills Golf Club.
Chang shot two rounds of even-par 72 on Saturday and closed with a final-round 76 on Sunday. She accumulated nine birdies over 54 holes and took just one double. She completed the tournament tied for 21st at 4 over par. It is her sixth top-25 finish in seven tournaments on her sophomore campaign.
Xu carded rounds of 76, 1-under-par 71 and 2-over 74 to finish tied for 26th at 5 over for the tournament. She had eight birdies over three rounds and, like Chang, made just a single double across those 54 holes. Her second-round 71 included four birdies and three bogeys. Xu, who has won two tournaments on her rookie campaign, has finished in the top 30 six times in seven events.
The Lions were in a tight competition in the middle of the pack, as just five shots separated seventh from 12th place. Columbia (+31) beat out 12th-place Coastal Carolina (+32), finished one shot behind a two-way tie for ninth between Yale (+30) and North Florida (+30), three behind host Augusta (+28) and four behind seventh-place Georgia Southern (+27).
Three ranked teams finished in the top four of the tournament. They were all led by No. 34 Missouri, who won the team event at 2-under-par 862. Furman (+2) was second, No. 37 Kentucky (+5) was third and No. 41 Indiana (+13) was fourth. Another Big Ten team, Minnesota (+16), finished in fifth.
The Lions return to action April 5-7 at the Ironwood Spring Invitational, hosted by East Carolina University. The tournament will be held at Ironwood Country Club in Greenville, North Carolina.
