ITA Northeast Regionals Run Ends For Women's Tennis

Lions win 15 matches at ITA Northeast Regionals; Paulina Ferrari and Akanksha Bhan advance to Final Four of doubles, Melissa Sakar advances to Final Eight of singles.
WEST POINT, N.Y.—Columbia combined to win 15 matches at the 2019 ITA Northeast Division I Regional Championship this weekend at Army West Point. On Monday, the Lions' run came to an end as the doubles team of sophomore Akanksha Bhan and junior Paulina Ferrari and sophomore singles player Melissa Sakar both dropped semifinal matches in the challenging single-elimination tournament.
Bhan and Ferrari, who won four straight matches to advance in doubles competition, dropped a hard-fought 1-6, 6-1, 10-8 match to Yale's Caroline Dunleavy and Rhea Shrivastava on Monday. The duo advanced to the tournament's Final Four.
Sakar, who defeated No. 45 ranked Yufei Long of Boston College 6-1, 7-5 to advance to Monday's final eight, fell to Syracuse's Miranda Ramirez 5-7, 6-2, 6-0. Ramirez is the No. 64 ranked player in the country.
On Saturday, three Lions singles players—Bhan, Kerr, and Sakar—and one doubles team—Bhan and Ferrari—advanced to Sunday's quarterfinal rounds. Kerr and Bhan both dropped matches on Sunday.
Eight Columbia players were selected to compete this weekend. Six Lions competed in singles, along with three doubles teams including Main Draw singles players Bhan, Kerr, junior Christie Wan, Sakar, first-year Shivani Amineni, and first-year Michelle Xu. In Main Draw doubles, Columbia was represented by three teams: Bhan and Ferrari, Wan and Sakar, and Xu and first-year Julia Haynes.
