Lions Have Solid Showing At Soggy Princeton Chase

Columbia's heavy and lightweight rowing squads competed at the Princeton Chase, on Sun. Oct. 27, with the lightweights posting a 6th place finish in the V8+ and the heavyweights posting a 24th place finish in the V8+.

PRINCETON, N.J. – Both the Columbia heavyweight and lightweight rowing teams took to a wet and soggy Lake Carnegie, on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Princeton Chase, with the lightweight Varsity Eight+ 'A' boat clocking the best finish of the day for the Lions, finishing sixth overall in the three-mile race and the heavyweight V8+ 'B' boat registering a top 25 finish as the Lions had a solid final fall race and they now turn their sights on the 2020 season.

"Our guys were focused on competing against each other on Sunday," said heavyweight head coach Scott Alwin. "And they've been doing that well in practice for the last few weeks. For our squad, those hard-fought practices are more valuable to us and the guys are looking forward to winter training and as we lock down our best lineups before the Eastern Sprints and IRAs."

HOW THE LIGHTWEIGHTS FINISHED: Consisting of coxswain Simon Osak, Alexandros Zisimidis, Torrance Smith, Curtis Alter, John Robison, Aidan Mahaffey, John Gallagher and Lukas Geiger the V8+ 'A' boat gave Columbia its best finish on the day, crossing the line with a time of 13:32.215, which in the time trial format that the Princeton Chase followed, was the sixth best time recorded in the event.

Rounding out Columbia's pair of top 20 finishes, the V8+ 'B' boat, which was crewed by Dion Ariestanto (COX), Alex Overmeer, Kevin Borup, Max Amsterdam, Michael Ritter, Levi Beckett, Travis Kennedy III, Tucker Wurtmann and Aidan Norder, recorded the 17th-best time in the three-mile race, completing the course in 14:04.780.

HOW THE HEAVYWEIGHTS FINISHED: Columbia's top finish in the heavyweight side of things was the V8+ 'B' boat, which was coxed by Alex Herron (COX); Ryan Lee; Henry Quinn-Pasin; Kyle Fram; John Theodore; Punisa Lekovic; Kevin Kearney; Chris Magnani; John Stankard and that crew crossed the line in 13:58.461, for the 24th-best time to finish the course. "Credit to all nine in the 'B' boat," said Alwin. "That crew gets to carry bragging rights into the winter of training alongside their teammates."

The 'C' entry improved from what we've seen in practice the last week or so," said Alwin. The 'C' boat finished 34th (14:15.019) and the 'A' crew finished right behind their teammates, coming in at 35th with a time of 14:17.636. "John Tanguay, who sat in the five seat in the' C' boat, did a good job for the crew, and he was not alone as the three sophomores in the stern three, Neil Kennedy, Oliver Babb, and Robert Doyle all did great jobs," said Alwin.
