Men win 19-8 decision, while women take 22-5 victory over the Violets in dual match held at NYU.
NEW YORK – The Columbia Lions fencing teams dominated this week as it claimed both a men's and women's team victory over NYU Thursday evening in Manhattan. Columbia's women's team won a 22-5 match, while the men claimed a 19-8 decision. The matchup took place at the Rosenthal Pavilion in NYU's Kimmel Center on Thursday, November 14.
Women's Foil, featuring fencers Ester Schreiber (Gothenburg, Sweden), Rachel Zhang (Winchester, Mass.), and Natalie Minarik (Glen Oaks, New York), dominated the competition concluding with an 9-0 record. Epee finished 8-1 over the violets with top fencers such as, Giana Vierheller (Pittsburgh, Pa.), LeeAnn Choy (Basking Ridge, NJ), and Ariana Mangano (Colts Neck, N.J.) representing for the Lions. Concluding the Women's competition was the saber division winning with a final score of 5-4.
Men's Sabre claimed victory with a final record of 7-2. Fencers competed in this round include, Dawson Sieradzky (Wayne, NJ), Christopher Walker (Atlanta, Ga), and Brian Szeto (Weston, Mass.) Men's foil and epee both concluded with a record of 6-3 to solidify the win.
"NYU gave us a great fight from the beginning and it was the way our team handed the close 4-4 situations winning nine of eleven that made the difference. I am very proud of our first years who saw a lot of playing time as well as everyone showing up with energy and drive to win our opener," said head coach Michael Aufrichtig.
The Lions look forward to competing this upcoming November 23-24 at the 47th Max Garret Penn State Open at Penn State.
