NEW YORK — Using scores from three different Lion forwards, the Columbia women's soccer team soared to an impressive 3-1 victory over the visiting Yale Bulldogs in front of a roaring crowd at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.
Â
Stretching their unbeaten streak to five, Columbia rises to 9-3-3 on the season with a 3-1-2 mark in Ivy League matches, while the Bulldogs drop to 11-4-0, 4-2 Ivy.
Â
"It's incredible. I'm so proud of the girls," said Columbia head coach
Tracey Bartholomew after the win. "We talk a lot about when we're organized, how we can generate and win the ball in great places and we did. And we punished them in some of those moments and we had a few more opportunities as well. Everyone's energy right from the start, we knew whatever moments we were gonna get at goal that hopefully we were going to finish them."
Â
Against a Yale defense that had only allowed 10 goals all season, the Lions sent in a trio of goals which were the most allowed by the Bulldogs in a single game this season. Columbia's three goals were also the most the Lions had scored in an Ivy League contest since defeating Dartmouth 3-0 on Oct. 21, 2017.
Â
It took some time to settle in, but for the second-straight game senior forward
Emily Koe opened up the scoring to give the Lions an early lead in the 36th minute. After a cross from sophomore
Kayla Lee was deflected by the hands of Yale keeper Alyssa Fagel, the ball fell straight to Koe who one-touched into the bottom right corner from just in front of the goal. The goal marked Koe's third of the season, while Lee earned her first career assist.
Â
After carrying a 1-0 lead through halftime, Columbia continued to play aggressive and it paid off when junior forward
Jordyn Geller doubled the lead in the 51st minute. Using a double assist from first-year forwards
Shira Cohen and
Ally Clark, Geller buried a goal under the crossbar from seven yards out for her third goal of the 2019 campaign and her second career goal in an Ivy match.
Â
Cohen tacked on the third goal for Columbia in the 59th minute, stealing the ball from Fagel and sliding the ball perfectly into the bottom right corner of the open net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Â
Yale finally got on the board in the 68th minute off a goal from Aerial Chavarin, but the Bulldogs wouldn't come any closer as Columbia goalie
Liz Matei made four big stops in the final 10 minutes of action. Matei finished the night with five total saves, playing all 90 minutes between the sticks.
Â
The Lions will play their final regular season contest next Saturday, Nov. 9, hosting Harvard at 5 p.m. The contest will serve as Senior Day for Columbia's eight seniors.
