Manchio Takes First At 125 Pounds; Lions Place Nine At The Roadrunner Open

Columbia Wrestling sophomore Joe Manchio turned in five wins on his way to the title at 125 pounds.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Columbia Wrestling (0-1) sophomore Joe Manchio capped off a weekend where he collected six wins by taking the title at 125 pounds at the Roadrunner Open hosted by CSU-Bakersfield, while eight other Lions placed on a successful Sunday afternoon at the Icardo Center to wrap up the Lions' weekend on the West Coast.
Manchio won five matches on Sunday, adding to the win he took over No. 14 Gabriel Townsell of Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 23, on his way to taking the title at 125 pounds by taking down Nicholas Raimo (Arizona State-Unattached) in a 6-5 decision. Joining Manchio on the podium was No. 19 sophomore Matt Kazimir, who finished second at 141 pounds, first-year Lennox Wolak (174 pounds/second place), first-year Angelo Rini (125 pounds/third place), first-year Trent Svingala (133 pounds/fourth place), Danny Conley (285 pounds/fourth place), Riley Jacops (157 pounds/fifth place), Sam Wustefeld (197 pounds/fifth place) and first-year Kyle Mosher, who finished sixth at 165 pounds.
MANCHIO'S PATH TO THE 'SHIP: Entering the tournament having already scored a big win on the weekend, Manchio quickly went to work by taking down Josiah Griego (Grand Canyon) by fall (1:10) to move into the next round. Manchio's next match was not easy, but Manchio battled his way to a 7-6 decision over Logan Ashton (Stanford-Unattached), which punched his ticket to the quarterfinals.
In the quarters, Manchio controlled his match against Gregory Viloria (Menlo-Unattached) winning with a 5-0 decision and he followed that up with a 6-0 decision over Alejandro Hernandez-Figueroa (CSU-Bakersfield) to head into the finals. Manchio faced Raimo in the finals and the match went down to the wire, but Manchio's 6-5 decision earned him the title at 125 pounds and a 6-0 undefeated weekend for the Lion sophomore.
Wolak joined Kazimir with a second-place finish of his own at 174 pounds and he got his first win over Tyee Ducharme (San Francisco State) with a technical fall victory (21-5). Wolak next took down Zack Gonzalez (Unattached) by fall (3:15), Daniel Butler (Embry Riddle) with a 6-2 decision before falling to Jackson Hemauer (Fresno State) with a 6-1 decision.
At 125 pounds, Rini gave the Lions their fourth top three finisher and his day started with a win by fall (4:03) over Jacob Mendoza (Menlo CA). Antonio Lorenzo (Cal Poly-Unattached) was Rini's next win (dec. 5-2) and he next took down Edward Flores (CSU-Bakersfield) with a 4-0 decision to move into the semifinals. In the semis, Rini fell to Raimo in a 9-5 decision that moved Rini into the consolation round, where he moved into the third-place match with a no contest victory over Jackson DiSario (Stanford). In the third-place match, Rini again knocked off Flores, this time with a 10-5 decision to finish third overall.
Svingala, who recorded three wins at 133 pounds, finished fourth overall, while Conley earned four wins of his own at 285 pounds to finish fourth. Jacops finished fifth at 157 pounds, racking up five wins along the way, while Wustefeld's five wins earned him a fifth-place finish. Rounding out Columbia's placers was Mosher, who at 165 pounds, collected five wins on his way to a sixth-place finish.

PLACING LIONS: Along with Manchio, eight other Lions placed at the tournament, which gave Columbia nine student-athletes who placed. Kazimir's second place finish, at 141 pounds, was the next best finish for Columbia after Manchio's title, as he took down Chaz Hallmark (Cal. Baptist-Unattached) by fall (1:46), Noah Blakely-Beanes (CSU-Bakersfield) by technical fall (20-1), Wyatt Cornelison (Cal Poly), by fall (2:16) and Lawrence Saenz (Fresno State) with a 10-4 decision.
