Columbia Wrestling collected 98.5 team points to finish second overall.
FAIRFAX, Va. – For the second time in the first month of the 2019-20 season, No. 19 Matt Kazimir can call himself champion at 141 pounds as the Columbia Wrestling (0-1) sophomore captured the 141-pound title at the Patriot Open to lead the Lions, who placed five on their way to a second place team finish (98.5 points) in Fairfax, Virginia on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Sophomore No. 16 Joe Manchio (third place/125 pounds), first-year Trent Svingala (fourth place/133 pounds), sophomore Joe Franzese (fifth place/184 pounds) and first-year Angelo Rini (sixth place/133 pounds) all joined Kazimir with giving the Lions top place finishes across several weight classes. The five Columbia placers helped power the Lions to a second-place overall finish at the tournament, finishing only behind Army on the day.
NO. 19 POWERS HIS WAY TO THE 'SHIP: Kazimir took five matches on the day, improving his season record to 14-1 on the season, and his championship day at 141 pounds started with a major decision (12-3) over Bryan Miraglia (Rider) to get rolling. Kazimir followed up his opening win with back-to-back dominate results, first recording a technical fall score of 15-0 over Dominic Carone (Army), and he next stuck Brandon Bright (Gardner-Webb) in 4:42 to move into the semifinals.
The next two matches would be battles for Kazimir, but the Lion 141-pounder was up to the challenge, taking down Corey Shie (Army) in a close 3-2 decision to punch his ticket to the finals. In the finals, Kazimir faced Salvatore Profaci (American) and a solid 5-2 decision over Profaci gave Kazimir the 141-pound title and his second title of 2019-20, having taken the title at 141 pounds in the season opener at the Princeton Open (Nov. 3).
PLACING LIONS: Along with Kazimir, the Lions placed five on the day, as Manchio worked his way to a third place finish, collecting three wins along the way to improve his season record to 14-2 and his 8-2 decision over Trey Chalifoux (Army) in the third place match locked up his top three finish at 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, Svingala collected a pair of major decision wins over Jacob Lehman (Millersville), 12-0, and Josh Jones (George Mason), 8-0, on his way to a fourth-place finish.
In the 184-pound bracket, Franzese racked up four wins to bounce back from an early major decision (4-12) loss to Brian Bonino (NYC RTC), to collect a fifth place finish and on his way to the top five finish Franzese collected his first fall of the season with a pin at 5:45 against Bryan Martin (Rider). Columbia's final wrestler to place was Rini, who, thanks to three hard fought wins, worked his way onto the podium to finish sixth at 133 pounds.
