Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Lions Tripped Up at Bryant, 67-65

The Bulldogs came up with a steal and dunk in the closing seconds to steal a win from Columbia.

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Bryant's Mikail Simmons broke a tie ball game with a steal and dunk with seven seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 67-65 victory over the Columbia men's basketball team Friday night. The contest featured 11 tie scores, including five in the final five minutes, and nine lead changes.

Randy Brumant posted a career-high 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting to go with 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Mike Smith netted 22 points, extending his string of consecutive 20-point games to six, and dished out seven assists.

With the Bulldogs (6-4) leading, 57-53, the Lions recorded six unanswered, capped by a Smith layup to put Columbia (3-7) up two at the 4:49 mark. From there the teams, traded baskets down the stretch and the game was evened up again on a pair of free throws from Elisias Hall with 37 seconds to go.

The Lions used a timeout to draw up a final shot, but Simmons stole the ball off a handoff, went coast-to-coast and was fouled. However, Simmons missed the free throw and the Lions raced up the floor with a chance to tie or win. Smith's defender fell down, allowing the senior to pull up from beyond the arc on the left wing and the shot rimmed out just before the final horn.

After a back-and-forth start, the Bulldogs ripped off a 12-3 run to go in front by seven with 10:01 left in the first. Adam Grant buried a 3-pointer to make it 20-14 at the 8:43 mark before the Lions climbed back. Brumant registered seven-straight 2:01 stretch to put Columbia on top, 23-22, with 3:27 before the half. Bryant was held to just one field goal over the final 8:43 of the period and the Lions held a four-point advantage at the midway point.

Columbia shot 11-of-17 (64.7 percent from the foul line) and Bryant was just 4-of-14 (28.6 percent). The Bulldogs scored 13 points off of 11 Lions turnovers, compared to just two for Columbia on nine Bryant miscues.

Adam Grant led the Bulldogs with 20 points and added six rebounds. Simmons and Ikenna Ndugba each added 12 points.

The Lions will remain on the road to face off against Duquesne Monday, December 9. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. The contest will be played at La Roche University in Pittsburgh while Duquesne's arena is under construction.
