CHICAGO — After falling to No. 3 seed Wake Forest yesterday, the 14th-seeded and 12th-ranked Columbia men's tennis team bounced back in a big way, earning their first ranked win of the season over No. 11 Notre Dame, 4-2, at the Midtown Athletic Club in downtown Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Lions move to 4-1 on the 2019 campaign. The Fighting Irish fall to 8-3 overall.
 
"The boys fought hard coming back today," said Columbia head coach Bid Goswami after the victory. "It was a good Notre Dame team who had beaten Oklahoma to make it to the round of 16, so it was good win. I thought we played pretty well. We played very good doubles and won three singles matches, so it was good."
 
Columbia got off on the right foot, cruising through doubles with a pair of wins on courts one and three. On the top court, Jack Lin and Jackie Tang teamed up for a 6-2 victory. Victor Pham and Rian Pandole teamed up for a matching 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. On court two, Adam Ambrozy and William Matheson led 5-3 before the point was secured.
 
"Even after we lost yesterday, I think the guys knew we played really well against a really good Wake Forest team," said Goswami. "They knew that we were a little unlucky and if we play a good team we have to finish them off. I think they were all pretty down to have that opportunity and not win the match, but I think that a good win like today helps."
 
Tang gave the Lions a 2-0 lead over the Irish by earning a quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tristan McCormick at No. 3 singles.
 
Notre Dame cut the lead in half as Timothy Wang fell in straight sets to No. 123 Axel Nefve. Sophomore Austen Huang picked up a 6-3, 6-4 triumph to put the Lions within one point of the team win.
 
On the top singles court, No. 11 Lin clinched the 4-2 victory, taking down No. 18 Alex Lebedev in a second-set tiebreak, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
 
"I think we have to give the game ball to Jack Lin," said Goswami. "He clinched the match by beating their No. 1 player, who is ranked 18th in the country - a very good player."
 
The Lions will continue action tomorrow against 10th-seeded Baylor at 10 a.m. ET. The Bears are coming off a 4-1 victory over No. 2-seed Mississippi State.
