PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Columbia men's basketball team came up with an 80-77 road victory at Brown Saturday night. The Lions (8-17, 3-8) used a balanced offensive attack, paced by 16 points and seven rebounds from Patrick Tapé to come up victorious.
Gabe Stefanini finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Jake Killingsworth registered 14 points, going 4-of-8 from downtown to round out Columbia's double-figure scorers.
The Lions turned a two-point halftime deficit into a 44-41 lead after a Tapé dunk with 15:52 remaining. However, the Bears (17-10, 5-6) rattled off an 11-1 run to take their largest lead of the night, 52-45, at the 12:36 mark. Columbia eventually tied the game on
Quinton Adlesh's pull-up jumper with 8:40 on the clock, but a 3-point play from Tamenang Choh made it 57-53 less than a minute later.
From there, the Lions came up with three key stops and got to the foul line on three consecutive possessions, going 7-of-7 during the stretch to grab a 65-59 cushion with 5:21 to go. After trading buckets, Desmond Cambridge drilled back-to-back treys to knot things up, 67-67, with 3:59 on the clock.
Cambridge, who finished with 25 points, fouled out with 3:10 remaining. The teams exchanged free throws on the next two trips before Stefanini played the role of closer. With the score 69-69, the sophomore drained a contested triple in front of Columbia's bench and then converted from 30-feet out with the shot clock winding down to make it a six-point contest with 53 seconds left.
The Lions took care of the ball and went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to remain up 80-74. Zach Hunsacker made it a one possession game with four seconds left, but Columbia was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock to hang on for its second road win in last three tries.
In the first half, Columbia went ahead 7-2 before Brown rattled off 10-straight to go head by five with 3:27 into the contest. Choh put the Bears up 16-12, but
Tai Bibbs provided a spark off the bench, scoring all seven of his points during a span of three-plus minutes to help the Lions go up 23-21 with 7:47 before the half.
The rest of the half featured four lead changes and a pair of ties, but Choh's layup with 36 seconds left gave Brown a 39-37 advantage heading into the locker room.
Cambridge went 6-of-11 from downtown in 31 minutes of action. Choh also had 25 points and added nine boards.
Columbia has one final road game Saturday, March 2 at Yale. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
