STORRS, Conn. – Senior midfielder
Lindsey Ewertsen had a career-high eight points and sophomore attacker
Alexandria Absey posted a game-high four goals to lead the Columbia women's lacrosse team past UConn, 13-7, at the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon. After trailing 6-5 at halftime, the Lions outscored the Huskies, 8-1, in the second half to secure the victory.
Â
"We had an incredible second half and made the adjustments we needed on the draw control to help us win possession and control the pace of the game," said Columbia head coach
Andrea Cofrin. "Offensively, we moved the ball the best we have all season. Lindsey had an impressive day, breaking the draw control record and being part of almost every goal scored in the second half. Defensively, we played the best we have all season and took 1v1 defense and a solid slide package which allowed Abby (Roberts) to see the ball and come up with some huge saves."
Â
Ewertsen had a record setting day, becoming Columbia's all-time career leader in draw controls with 197, grabbing three in Saturday's outing. Her eight points came behind two goals and a career-best six assists, which also ties the program record for single game assists previously set by Holly Glynn (April 27, 2006 vs. Vermont) and matched by
Victoria Kalamaras against Harvard last season.
Â
With 13 goals, Columbia (3-5) matched its highest scoring output of the season after posting 13 goals in the season-opening win against Siena. Columbia used eight different goal-scorers for just the second time this season. Â
Â
The Lions' defense was outstanding in the second half, forcing 13 turnovers and limiting the Huskies to just five shots on goal in the period. Roberts played all 60 minutes in goal for Columbia, registering nine saves and allowing a season-low seven goals.
Â
After UConn (1-6) scored the opening goal of the game, the Lions fired in back-to-back scores to take a brief one-point lead. The two teams traded goals for the entire opening half, which saw five ties, until the Huskies ended the period with consecutive scores to take the slight 6-5 advantage into the locker room.
Â
Out of the break, first-year
Katie Lutz would equalize on a free position shot to earn the first of eight-straight goals for the Lions. Junior midfielder
Fallon Quinn gave Columbia its 7-6 edge with 24:40 remaining, and the Lions never trailed again in the contest. Of Columbia's eight second-half goals, Ewertsen assisted on four and scored a pair of free position goals.
Â
Columbia begins a three-game homestand on Tuesday, March 19, facing off against Villanova at 6 p.m. ET.
