JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Columbia baseball team fell to North Florida, 11-4, to wrap up its series with the Ospreys Sunday afternoon. UNF (13-9) broke away with four runs in the second inning and put it away with three in the seventh to preserve a series split.
Liam McGill continued his hot-streak with a 3-for-4 performance and the plate. Julian Bury was 4-for-5 with a double. Joshua Solomon was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
The Lions and Ospreys each notched 13 hits and stranded 11 baserunners apiece.
The Ospreys began the first with three consecutive hits with Tanner Murphy's double giving UNF a 1-0 lead. The next two batters walked, forcing in another run after the base on balls with the bases juiced. Columbia (2-10) then recorded an out at the plate for the first out, but two more came in after a sac fly and miscue by the Lions. The Lions relay to third got by Matt Cerfolio, allowing the Ospreys to jump out to a 4-0 lead.
With McGill on first after a leadoff single in the second, Joshua Solomon dropped down a bunt for a hit with the infield playing back to keep a rally alive. After an AJ DiFillipo walk, Ben Porter hit an opposite field single to right. Julian Bury followed with a base hit to left to bring home Solomon and DiFillipo came around after the ball got by the leftfielder to make it 4-3.
The leadoff batter reached again in the second and scored on a J Prather single. Another single and hit batter loaded the bases and Tanner May cleared the bases with a double to make it 8-3. In the seventh, Tanner Clark doubled with the bases loaded to plate two more. A sac fly pushed the advantage to 11-3.
Solomon's double in the eighth led to the fourth run of the afternoon for Columbia. A groundout to the right side pushed him to third and Jack Chernow hit a fly ball deep enough to bring in the runner.
Sean Higgins (0-3) was tagged for seven earned runs in two innings.
Raff Libunao was 3-for-5 for the Ospreys. Nick Marchese threw 5.1 innings of relief, allowed just one run and struck out four.
