AUSTIN, Texas — The No. 12 Columbia closed out its three-match trip to the Lone Star State on Friday evening, falling 6-1 to the third-ranked Texas Longhorns at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Lions move to 9-3 overall on the season, with all three losses coming against top-10 foes. Texas improves to 17-1 overall.
Taking the early momentum, the Longhorns clinched the doubles point with a pair of wins on the top two courts as Columbia's top tandem of No. 12 Jack Lin/Will Matheson fell 6-1 to Texas' seventh-ranked Christian Sigsgaard/Harrison Scott, before Texas sealed the first point with a 6-2 triumph over Columbia's Adam Abrozy/Austen Huang on court two.
Singles play was tightly contested, but Texas would wrap up the team victory by way of wins on the top three courts.
Sophomore Rian Pandole earned the Lions' lone point of the match with a huge 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 59 Scott on court four.
Senior Timothy Wang played the only three-set match of the outing, dropping a very close 2-6, 6-3, 4-3 (8) decision at No. 5 singles.
Columbia will return home next weekend to face Buffalo on Friday, March 29 at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center. The match will serve as the Lions' final non-conference tune up before kicking off Ivy League play against Yale on April 6.
