NEW YORK – Five Columbia pitchers combined to throw a three-hit shutout as the Lions took down Monmouth, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon. Joshua Solomon drove in the lone run of the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the second to give Columbia all the cushion they would need.
Starter Sean Higgins picked up his first collegiate victory (1-4) after throwing three scoreless frames, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Dan Harrington earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Week Josh Nicoloff started the second with a walk and stole second for his eighth of the season. A groundout pushed him to third and Solomon squared up a 2-1 pitch into center for a base-hit.
Higgins came up with a big shutdown frame in the top of the third, fanning Monmouth's (14-21-1) top hitter, Clay Koniecki to keep the Lions in front. Starting in the fifth, relievers Billy Black and Ian Burns teamed up to retire the next 12 Hawk batters in order.
In the ninth, Monmouth had one last chance after drawing a one-out walk. Shortstop Joe Engel made a huge defensive play, diving to his left and smothering ball hit toward the bag at second. Engel's only play was to quickly flip the ball to Jack Chernow at second, and despite getting the lead runner, Chernow's relay throw beat the runner at first for out number two. Harrington forced a fly out to the next batter to close things out.
Solomon was 2-for-3 on the day to lead the Lions.
Evan Ferris (1-1) took the decision, despite 4.0 innings of one-run ball for Monmouth.
Columbia won a 1-0 decision for the first time since April 25, 2015, when Adam Cline and Ty Wiest combined for the shutout against Penn.
The Lions remain at home for one last Ivy League series against Brown. The teams will meet for a twinbill on Saturday, April 20, beginning at 11:30 a.m. followed by a single game Sunday, April 21 at noon. Sunday's contest will mark Columbia's senior day. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
