NEW YORK – A pair of late rallies ultimately came up just short as Brown topped the Columbia baseball team, 8-5, Saturday in the opening game of a three-game set. The Lions trailed by as many as seven before a three-run seventh and bringing the winning run to the plate with the bases loaded in the ninth.
After Mark Sluis hit a two-run blast to make it 8-1 in favor of the Bears (10-20, 7-6) in the seventh, Columbia (14-16, 9-4) plated three after the stretch. The Lions drew back-to-back walks and AJ DiFillipo singled to fill the base paths. Julian Bury delivered a two-run single to center and Joe Engel worked a walk to pull the Lions within four.
Ian Burns worked 2.1 shutout frames to keep Columbia within striking distance. In the ninth, DiFillipo singled for his third hit of the contest and Julian Bury doubled after a hard-hit ball went off the glove of the Brown first baseman. Joe Engel worked a walk to load the bases and Joshua Solomon followed with a grounder that the shortstop could not handle to keep the line moving. However, Will Tomlinson came on to induce a 4-6-3 double play to slam the door on Columbia (14-16, 9-4).
The teams traded runs in the third when Brown's Willy Homza singled through the left side to bring in Garret Delano. Bury answered with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
The Bears took the lead for good after a pair of wild pitches brought in two runs to make it 3-1. Frank Caprio delivered a big blow with a two-run single and Delano, who also started the game at pitcher, helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly before Columbia's theatrics.
Delano improved to 3-3 on the year, tossing 6.1 innings of four-run ball with six strikeouts. Joe Lomuscio and Sluys had three hits each for Brown.
For Columbia, Josh Simpson gave up five earned runs on seven hits and five strikeouts over 5.1 frames. Ben Porter scored a pair of runs and was 2-for-3.
The Lions and Bears will meet for a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday, April 21. Columbia will honor the eight members of its senior class between games. For those not in attendance, both contests will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
