Jennifer Wang becomes the third player in school history to earn First Team All-Ivy League honors in Women's Golf.
NEW YORK—Ivy League runner-up and first-year Jennifer Wang became just the third player in school history to earn First Team All-Ivy League honors as the conference released its 2019 women's golf awards Thursday morning. The awards were voted upon by the league's seven head coaches.
Wang joins Jackie Chulya (2017 and 2015) and Michelle Piyapattra (2011, 2012 and 2014) as the only three Columbia women's golfers to earn First Team All-Ivy League honors since the conference reconfigured its awards in 2010.
On Sunday, Wang finished in second place with a four-over-par 70-77-73-220 at the 2019 Ivy League Women's Golf Championship. She finished just two strokes behind individual leader Elizabeth Wang of Harvard, who concluded the invite at two-over-par 218. Wang entered the final day of competition with a one-stroke lead and led the field throughout the first two days. She finished the three-day championship with eight birdies, 34 pars and led the field in par-5 scoring (4.80), third in the field in par-4 scoring (4.25) and seventh in the field in par-3 scoring (3.07).
Wang's 70 in Friday's first round represented the second lowest round score-ever for a Columbia player in Ivy League Championship competition. Her round 70 score ranks second to Piyapattra, who shot a 69 in the final round en route to the individual title in 2011.
In her first year as a collegiate golfer, Wang finished second on the squad in stroke average at 76.35 (1,298 strokes in 17 rounds), posted the team's top scores for round (70) and 54-hole (220) and registered three top-25 finishes. Besides the Ivy League Championship, her top finish came at the FAU Winter WarmUp where she placed 12th at eight-over-par 76-76-152. Wang also shot a team and career-low 71 at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational earlier this year.
As a team, Columbia finished third at this past weekend's Ivy League Championship.
