Brown Tops Columbia, 13-8, in Season Finale

Sophomore Chelsea Witteck led the Columbia offense with three goals

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Columbia lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the final nine minutes of action, but the Lions fell 13-8 to the Brown Bears at Stevenson-Pincince Field to wrap up the 2019 campaign on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore attacker Chelsea Witteck led the charge for the Lions, registering her fifth multiple goal game of the season with three scores, while senior midfielder Laine Parsons and first-year midfielder Katie Lutz each recorded a pair of goals in the contest. Sophomore attacker Alexandria Absey also notched a career-high three assists.

Brown (8-7, 4-3 Ivy League) opened up the game with four straight goals before Witteck burst through with her first goal of the game off an Absey dime at the 9:53 mark. The Bears would extend their lead with three more goals, but Columbia (4-11, 1-6 Ivy) had the final first-half goal as Witteck sent in a free-position goal with just over three minutes on the clock.

After the Bears struck first in the second half, Witteck answered with her third goal of the game to complete the hat trick, once again off an Absey dime. Brown then used a 5-1 run to take its largest lead of the day at 13-4 with 10:36 to play.

With 8:36 remaining, senior midfielder Emily Manville kickstarted a 4-0 run for the Lions. Lutz would send in back-to-back goals and Parsons drove in for a goal with 3:39 on the clock, but the time would expire before Columbia could cut the deficit any further.

The Lions once again split time in goal, with junior Abby Roberts playing the first half with four saves and first-year Ryan Schlageter entering for the final 30 minutes to make three stops.
