Lin Moves On to NCAA Singles Round of 16

Sophomore Jack Lin earns All-America distinction after reaching the third round of the tournament

ORLANDO, Fla. — Columbia sophomore Jack Lin is still fighting in the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship after picking up a 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Texas A&M's Carlos Aguilar in the second round on Tuesday afternoon.

Advancing to the Round of 16, Lin becomes the first All-American for Columbia since Winston Lin '15CC made it to the quarterfinals of the tournament in 2015.

The first set was back and forth, but No. 22 Lin ultimately gained the upper hand, grinding through to win a first-set tiebreak, 8-6, before registering the match victory with a 6-2 second-set result. Lin will square off against another Southeastern Conference opponent in Missisippi State's No. 61 Giovanni Oradini on Wednesday in the third round at 5 p.m. ET on Tennis Channel.

A stellar Columbia career came to a close for 37th-ranked senior and Ivy League Player of the Year Victor Pham on Tuesday, falling in a hard-fought battle to Texas' No. 12 Yuya Ito, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Pham concludes the season with an impressive 18-5 overall record after missing the fall season due to a wrist injury.

The Lions duo of Lin and senior William Matheson also saw their run in the NCAA Doubles Championship end, clawing their way back from the early deficit to force the third-set super breaker. Going up against the nation's sixth-ranked pair of Timo Stodder/Preston Touliatos of Tennessee, the Volunteers took the first set, 6-0. Tennessee once again went up 2-0 early, but the Lions would respond with five-straight games before taking the set, 6-4.

In the tiebreaker, Lin and Matheson went ahead 3-0 early and would keep the lead until Stodder/Touliatos had match point with a 9-8 lead. In the end, Tennessee held on to take the match, 6-0, 4-6, [12-10].
