The Lions heavyweight and lightweight teams begin competition at the three-day event Friday morning in Sacramento.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Columbia lightweight and heavyweight rowing teams have spent the last week training in California as they gear up for the IRA National Championships, being held May 31-June 2 on Lake Natoma. Friday morning features the preliminary heats in the morning followed by heavyweight repechages in the afternoon. Heavyweight semifinals take place Saturday morning with finals slated for Sunday.
The lightweights are the defending National Champions after winning the varsity eight last season and have taken gold at the regatta two of the last three years. The Lions, who finished fifth overall at the EARC Sprints two weekends ago, will send two crews of four, one coxed the other a straight four, as well. Columbia needs a top-three finish in the Friday morning prelims to gain entry into the grand finals of each event.
The Lions' heavyweights will compete in the varsity and second varsity eight races. Columbia placed 12th over all at EARC Sprints and gained an at-large berth in the field of 24 crews. In the preliminaries, the Lions need a top-two finish or win a repechage in the afternoon to remain in contention for the grand or petite finals.
