PRINCETON, N.J.—Senior
Brian Zabilski won the men's 10,000-meter run individual title and 11 student-athletes qualified for Sunday's finals in five different events as the Columbia Track and Field team concluded day one at the 2019 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championships Saturday at Princeton's Weaver Track and Field Stadium. On Saturday, a total of 10 final events (five men's and women's) were completed: women's hammer throw, men's hammer throw, women's pole vault, men's pole vault, women's long jump, men's long jump, women's discus, men's discus and the men's and women's 10,000-meter run. The majority of the track events will take place on Sunday.
Zabilski finished the 10,000-meter run in 32:06.67, less than a half-second in front of Princeton's Conor Lundy (32:06.93). He held a slim lead going into the final 400 meters and held off Lundy for the victory. It marks Zabilski's second career and back-to-back outdoor 10,000-meter title as he also claimed victory in 2018 with a 30:20.67 effort. He is now a two-time Ivy League champion and seven-time All-Ivy League performer.
Other Columbia key scorers on Saturday included
Robert O'Brien, who placed tied for third in the men's pole vault (4.95m) and earned four points and sophomore school-record holder
Cameron Downey, who finished fourth in the women's discus throw (45.55m). In addition, junior
Abby McLaughlin scored two points with a fifth place finish in the women's 10,000-meter run (35:39.61), followed by a one-point, sixth place finish from sophomore
Samantha Marin in the women's 10,000-meter run (35:55.26). Senior
Tyler Italiano placed sixth in the men's 10,000-meter run (32:18.94) and earned one point.
Qualifying for finals on the women's side included sophomore
Sydney Groom, who ran the second fastest time in the 800-meter run (2:07.68), junior
Katie Wasserman, who ran the third fastest time in the 1,500-meter run (4:23.79), along with junior
Iman Sule (5
th, 54.59) in the 400-meter dash, senior
Annie Fanta (6
th, 4:24.79) in the 1,500-meter run and sophomore
Terri Turner (8
th, 2:09.57) in the 800-meter run.
On the men's side, four runners qualified for tomorrow's 800-meter run final including second place finisher and senior
Josiah Langstaff (1:52.24), third place finisher senior
Alek Sauer (1:53.02), fifth place sophomore
Jackson Storey (1:52.52) and seventh place senior
Solomon Rice (1:49.61). The Lions also qualified two runners for the 1,500-meter finals: senior
Sam Ritz, who placed eighth (3:51.66) and sophomore
Solomon Fountain, who finished in ninth place (3:49.42).
In the team competition, Columbia is currently in fifth place in the men's standings with 17 points and in seventh place in the women's with seven points.

The top six finishers in each event receive team points: 10 points for first place, eight points for second place, six points for third place, four points for fourth place, two points for fifth and one point for sixth place. All-Ivy awards are based on the results of the championships, with first-place (including relays) earning first-team All-Ivy and second-place (including relays) earning second-team All-Ivy. On Sunday, the league's eight coaches will vote on Most Outstanding Performers for both the women and men and Coach of the Year awards. On Tuesday, the league will announce the Most Outstanding Performer, Coach of the Year awards, along with the All-Ivy teams.
Adult Admission is $16 for a two-day pass and $10 for a single day pass. Student and youth 12 and under admission is $8 for a two-day pass and $5 for a single day pass. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
